William Judson, from whom all of the name in the country are supposed to have originated, with his sons Joseph, Jeremiah, and Joshua, came to New England in 1634, and lived in Concord till their removal to Hartford about 1640, where his descendants now live. A connexion was early formed between this and the Bulkeley family.


LAW. John Law, m. Lydia Draper 1660; lived where Joel Conant now lives in Acton ; his wife d. Jan. 6, 1733, a. 94 ; had John, Thomas, Stevens, and Samuel, who was a physician, and d. in Groton, Conn., April 29, 1727, a 47.


LEE. Joseph Lee, son of John, who came from London to Ipswich in 1635, and d. 1671, came to Concord ; m. three times. 1. Mary Woodhouse ; 2. widow Mary Wigley ; and 3. Mary Fox. He d. Nov. 4, 1716, a. 73, having had by his first wife, whose fa-

MARBLE. Samuel Marble was here from 1666 and onwards.


MARTIN. Ambrose Martin was among the first settlers ; fined £10 for calling the church-covenant a " stinking carrion " (see p. 152, and Winthrop, i. 289) ; removed.


MELVIN. John Melvin was here about 1700; and had, by his wife Margaret, Eleazer, and David, noted in the French war ; the latter m. Mary Farrar 1716.


MERRIAM. There were three brothers of this name among the first settlers, Robert, George, and Joseph. Robert was a tra- der, lived where the Trinitarian meeting-house stands ; was town- clerk, commissioner, representative, and deacon ; m. Mary Sheafe ; d. without issue Feb. 15, 1681, a. 72; she d. 1693, a. 72.


George, d. Dec. 29, 1675 ; had by his wife Susannah, Susan- nah, m. John Scotchford ; Elizabeth, m. Henry West of Salem ; Samuel, m. Elizabeth Thompson, and had four daughters ; Han- nah, m. William Taylor ; Abigail, m. Thomas Bateman ; and Sa- rah.

John, m. Mary Prescott 1702; d. Oct. 23, 1725; estate £1,708; and had John, Jonathan, H. C., Mary, m. Thomas Jones, Elizabeth, James, and Benjamin; of whom John m. Eliza- beth Brooks, and was father to John, Noah, and Abner, all of Westminster; Abel of New Ipswich, Elizabeth, Oliver, James of Winchendon, and Dorothy.


Samuel, son of the first John, m. Sarah Foster 1706; was a deacon; d. March 13, 1756, and had Samuel, Joseph, Sarah, Ezekiel, Esther, Martha, Nathan, Reuben of Westminster, and Charles, a captain in the revolution.


MIDDLEBROOK. Joseph Middlebrook removed from town in 1644.


MINOTT. This distinguished family is traced to Thomas Minott, Esq., Secretary to the Abbot of Walden, by whom he was advanced to great possessions. His son George was born Aug. 4, 1594, in Safron Walden, Essex, Eng. ; came to New England among the first settlers of Dorchester, where he was a ruling elder in the church thirty years ; d. Dec. 24, 1671, a. 78. His sons were John, James, Stephen, and Samuel ; of whom John was father to James, John, Stephen, and Samuel.


James, the eldest son of John, b. Sept. 14, 1653, graduated H. C. 1675, and came to Concord about 1680. While resident here, he was employed as a preacher in Stow in 1685, for " 12s. 6d. per day, one half cash, and one half Indian corn "; and in 1686 " for what older towns had given their ministers- £13 for thirteen Sabbaths." He was again invited there in 1695, but de- clined. He practised physic, was a captain, justice of the peace, representative, and eminently a useful man. Tradition accords to him a character worthy the following epitaph, which is engraven on his grave-stone :

Benjamin Barrett ; 3. Mary, m. Ebenezer Wheeler ; 4. Timothy, H. C. 1718 ; 5. James ; 6. Elizabeth ; 7. Martha, m. James Lane of Billerica ; 8 and 9. Love and Mercy, twins ; the former was m. to John Adams, the latter, to Samuel Dakin, on the same day, by their father ; and 10. Samuel.


Hon. JAMES MINOTT, the fifth child, was one of the most distin- guished men of his times. He was a military officer about thirty years, and advanced to colonel, justice of the peace, representative, and a member of the King's Council ; m. 1. Martha Lane 1716; had John, Rebecca (who m. Benjamin Prescott of Danvers), and James. His wife d. 1735; and he m. again, Elizabeth Merrick ; and had Martha, m. Rev. Josiah Sherman of Woburn ; Ephraim, and Elizabeth, m. Rev. Daniel Rogers of Littleton 1763. Col. Minott d. Feb. 6, 1759, a. 64.


Samuel, the tenth child of James, Jr., was a deacon ; d. March 17, 1766, a. 60. He m. 1. Sarah, da. of Jonas Prescott of West- ford, and had Samuel, Jonas, and Thankful Sarah, m. Dea. Amos Dakin of Mason, N. H. His wife d. 1737 ; and he m. again, Dorcas, sister of his wife ; she d. 1803, a. 91 ; had Dorcas, m. Thomas Barrett, George, Rebecca, m. Charles Barrett of New Ipswich, Daniel, and Mary, m. Elnathan Jones. Of these, Jonas had a grant in 1775, of the greatest part of Wilmot, N. H. ; d. March 20, 1813, a. 78; and George m. Rebecca Barrett 1765 ; was a captain in the revolution, deacon in the church, and other- wise distingushed.


MITCHEL. Jonathan Mitchel, from Halifax, Yorkshire, came to Concord in 1635, and two years after, " his beginnings were consumed by fire." He removed shortly after to Connecti- cut ; was father to Rev. Jonathan M. of Cambridge.


ODELL. William Odell, one of the first settlers, removed to Fairfield 1644.


OAKES. Edward Oakes, father to Urian Oakes, President of Harvard College, came to Concord about 1682; was represen- tative 1684 ; d. Oct. 13, 1689.

PARKS. Richard Parks, a lieutenant, representative, &c., was son of Richard P. of Cambridge; m. Elizabeth Billings of Concord, 1690 ; d. June 19, 1725, a 58. Children, Joseph, Eliz- abeth, Sarah, Josiah, Abigail, Jonathan, Hannah, David (d. 1701, " being scalded in wort," a. 2), Isaac, and Rebecca. Of whom Joseph m. and had eight children, born between 1719 and 1736 ; Benjamin, Stephen, David, Louis, Saralı, Elizabeth, Benjamin, and George.


PARLIN. John Parlin was here about 1680. He d. Feb. 24, 1750, a. 84; having had Jolin, Joseph, Jonathan, and Esther ; of whom John m. Mary Heald, May 12, 1718, and was father to Jonathan, who had Jonathan, Nathan, Samuel, Asa, and five daughters. Jonathan d. at Lake George in the army, 1758. Asa was town-clerk, representative, &c., in Carlisle, and d. Oct. 8, 1822, a. 68.


PASMORE. James was here in 1644.


PELLET. Thomas Pellet m. Mary Dean 1660 ; d. Dec. 1, 1694; said to have given the burying-ground near Dr. Hurd's, to the town. Children, Mary, Jonathan, Thomas, Elizabeth, Daniel, Samuel, Richard, and John. Name now extinct.


POTTER. Luke Potter was one of the first settlers of the town, and deacon of the church. He m. a second wife, Mary Ed- monds, 1644 ; she d. 1710. Eunice, Remembrance, Luke, Sam- uel, Dorothy, Mary, m. Humphrey Barrett, and Bethia, were his children by his first wife. Of whom Samuel m. Sarah Wright 1673, and was killed in Sudbury fight in 1676 ; Judah m. Grace Brooks 1686, and was burnt to death in his dwelling-house, June 20, 1731. She d. 1753, a. 93. " In Judah alone was the name preserved," and his descendants have been remarkable for their longevity. His children were Mary, Hannah, Eunice, Luke, who d. Sept. 25, 1784, a. 92, and whose son Samuel d. June 14, 1814, a. 96. Another Samuel d. Feb. 15, 1800, a. 95.


POWERS. Walter Powers was probably the son of John of Charlestown; m. a daughter of Ralph Shepherd, and lived near Nagog Pond, and his descendants were among the first incorpora- tors of Littleton.


PRESCOTT. Jonathan Prescott was the common ancestor of the Concord branch of this distinguished family. His father, John P., from Lancashire, Eng., m. Mary Platts of Yorkshire, and came to this country about 1640 ; and, after living a short time at Watertown, was a leading settler of Lancaster, where he d. 1683. His children were Mary, m. Thomas Sawyer, Sarah, m. Richard

Of these, Jonathan came to Concord ; m. Elizabeth Hoar 1675; she d. 1687 ; he m., second time, Peter Bulkeley's widow, and third time, Ruth Brown. He d. Dec. 5, 1721 ; had Jonathan, Elizabeth, m. John Fowle, Dorothy, m. Edward Bulkeley, John, Benjamin, H. C. 1709, and Mary, m. John Miles. Of whom, Jonathan has the following epitaph on his monumental slab :


" Here lyes the remains of Major JONATHAN PRESCOTT, Esq., a gentleman of virtue and merit, an accomplisht physitian, but excelling in chirurgery.


Of uncommon sagacity, penetration, and success in his practice, and so of very extensive service. But his life was much valued, and his death very generally lamented. He married the amiable and only daughter of the


Honorable Colonel PETER BULKLEY, Esq., by whom he had ten children.


He was removed from ministring to men's bodies, to the world of spirits, October 28th, 1829, Ætatis suæ 54."

Peter, noticed among the college graduates ; 5. Charles, m. Elizabeth Barrett, representative, colonel, &c., d. Feb. 2, 1779, a. 68 ; she d. 1799, a. 82 ; 6. Elizabeth, m. Rev. David Hall of Sutton ; 7. Dorothy ; 8. Abel, an eminent physician, m. Abigail Bugbee ; d. Oct. 24, 1805, a. 88 ; father to Abel and Samuel, noticed in the events of 19th April, 1775, John, Benjamin, Abigail, Doro- thy, and Lucy, m. Jonathan Fay, Esq. ; 9. Mary; 10. Benjamin, killed by the Indians 1744.


The descendants of John, Joseph, and Jonas, children of the first Jonathan, were numerous and respectable. John continued at Lancaster, where his sons lived. Joseph lived at Sudbury ; Jonas settled at Groton, was a captain, justice of the peace, and had a large estate ; m. Mary Loker 1672; d. Dec. 31, 1723, a. 75 ; she d. Oct. 28, 1735, a. 81, having lived to see 176 descen- dants. She had twelve children. Mary m. Benjamin Farns- worth ; Elizabeth m. Eleazer Green ; Jonas m. Thankful Wheel- er of Concord ; Nathaniel ; Dorothy m. John Varnum ; James ; Sarah m. John Longley ; Abigail m. James Parker ; Martha m. Shebuel Hobart ; Susanna m. William Lawrence ; Deborah m. Samuel Parker; and Benjamin, who m. Abigail Oliver of Cam- bridge, 1718, d. Aug. 3, 1738, a. 58, (she d. Sept. 13, 1765, a. 68,) and was father to Hon. James and Hon. Oliver, M. The Prescott family, once so numerous and influential, has no one now bearing its name in Concord.


PROCTOR. Robert Proctor m. Jane Hildreth 1645; d. April 28, 1697 ; had Sarah, Gershom, Mary, Peter, Elizabeth, James, Lydia, Thomas, John, Samuel, and Israel. The first four were born in Concord, and the remainder in Chelmsford, whither he removed in 1654.


PROUT. Ebenezer Prout, son of Timothy of Boston, m. Elizabeth, da. of Capt. Timothy Wheeler, 1678; was captain, representative 1689-90, and afterwards Clerk of the House of Representatives ; d. in Watertown. His father and brother lived some time in Concord.


PURCHIS. Oliver Purchis, whose da. m. Dea. James Blood, came.from Lynn to this town 1691, and was styled, on the records, " the worthy gentleman"; d. Nov. 20, 1701.


REED. Philip Reed was here from 1670; had several chil- dren, one of whom was styled Dr. Philip R., presumed to be a practising physician.


RICE. Richard Rice, d. June 9, 1709, " being accounted," says the record, " more than one hundred years old." Samuel R., whether a connexion is uncertain, m. Sarah Hosmer 1676. The name is not a prevalent one in Concord, though it is in Sudbury.


ROBBINS. Robert Robbins was here before 1670 ; m. Mary (Maxwell, according to tradition), and had George, John, Robert, James, Eleazer, and perhaps other children. The name is still prevalent here, though the connexion is not easily traced.


ROBINSON. William Robinson had children born here 1670-1675.


RUGG. John Rugg had Daniel and Jonathan, b. 1679 and 1680.


ROSS. George Ross, d. June 20, 1649.


SCOTCHFORD. John Scotchford was among the first set- tlers ; m. Susanna Merriam ; was town-clerk ; d. without issue, June 10, 1696 ; she d. 1707.


SHEPHERD. John Shepherd was here about 1648. In 1661 he had thirty acres of land granted him by the town "in consideration of the hand of God upon him in the loss of one of

his arms." This land lay near Mr. Silas Holden's. He subse- quently had a tract granted at Nagog Pond. He had a son John, b. 1661, and a da. Mary, 1662 (taken captive in 1676). Isaac Shepherd m. Mary Smeadly 1667; killed with his brother Jacob in 1676. Abraham Shepherd m. Judith Till 1672. All had families.


SMEADLY. Two brothers came to Concord before 1639. Baptiste d. Aug. 16, 1675; his son Samuel m. Hannah Wheeler 1667, and was killed at Brookfield, Aug. 2, 1675. Mary, and James, who m. Mary Barrett 1671, were also his children.


John S., brother to Baptiste, had a son born 1646, who m. Sarah -, and d. Oct. 1675. This name has long since been extinct.


SMITH. Thomas Smith, m. Mary Hosmer 1663, and had Thomas, James, and John born here, after which he is supposed to have removed to Connecticut.


SPENCER. A " Mr. Spencer " is said to have been present at the purchase of the town, but I have not been able to identify any one of the name as a proprietor or inhabitant till 1666 ; and the John here at the latter period was probably a different person from the one here in 1635.


SQUIRE. George Squire was here in 1640, but his name does not again appear.


STANIFORTH. Thomas Staniforth was here 1644, but removed.


STOW. Thomas Stow came to Concord before 1640; was father to Samuel, H. C. 1644, Thomas, Nathaniel, and perhaps other children. Thomas and Samuel owned jointly six hundred acres of land between Fairhaven pond and Sudbury line. Thomas sold his to Thomas Gobble and Daniel Dean 1660; Samuel sold his to Mr Woodhouse, with the other two mentioned ; both remov- ed to Connecticut. Nathaniel lived here ; m. second wife Martha Brignell, 1662; d. 1683 ; she d. 1717, a. 90. He had Thankful, Nathaniel, Ebenezer, beside several who d. young ; of whom Na- thaniel m. Ruth Merriam 1690, and had John, Joseph, Samuel, Nathaniel, Thomas, Benjamin, Jonathan, and perhaps others.


STRATTEN. Samuel Stratten d. Oct. 27, 1674, having had by his wife Mary, Mary, m. Daniel Hoar, Samuel, John, and sev- eral who died young. Samuel m. Hannah Wheat 1675, and had children, whose posterity lived on the alms-house farm, which once bore the name of the family. Elizabeth Stratten d. April 19, 1762, a. 100.

TAYLOR. There appear to have been two by this name as early as 1650. William m. Mary Merriam; d. Dec. 6, 1696 ; having had John, Samuel, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, and Mary. James m. Isabel Tompkins ; d. Jan. 22, 1690, having had several children. They lived within the present limits of Bedford. Sam- uel m. in 1686, and had a large family.


TEMPLE. Richard Temple, probably from Charlestown, was here before 1650; d. March 15, 1689. Among the names of his children, all of which are not preserved, I find Richard, d. 1698, father to Richard, Isaac, John, and Abraham ; Abraham, m. Deb- orah Hadlock 1673; she d. 1743, a. 94; Abigail, m. Thomas Brabrook. Rebecca Temple d. March 14, 1776, a. 94.


THWING. Benjamin Thwing was here in 1642, and proba- bly removed to Boston.


TOMPKINS. John Tompkins had Ruth and John b. here, 1640 and 1642. Removed to Fairfield.


TURNEY. Benjamin was here in 1638, but removed.


UNDERWOOD. William Underwood was here as early as 1638, where his children, Remembrance, m. Josiah Richardson, Sarah, m. Daniel Blodget, Priscilla, m. Edward Spaulding, Aquil- la, and Rebecca were born. Removed to Chelmsford in 1654.


WHEAT. Two brothers, Joshua and Moses Wheat, came from England. In 1640 Joshua sold his lands in Concord to his brother Moses, and returned to his father, then living in England, on condition that he would relinquish his right to any legacy from his father. Moses d. May 6, 1700 ; his wife Tameson d. 1689 ; having had Moses, Samuel, Joshua, Hannah, who m. Samuel Stratten, Remembrance, John, and Sarah, whose descendants are yet found in Carlisle.


WHEELER. This name was originally and has ever been borne by more persons than any other in the town. George, Joseph, and Obadiah were among the first settlers ; and Ephraim, Thomas, and Timothy came in 1639, and were all heads of families. Tra- dition says they came from Wales, but it is uncertain. Their de- scendants have been so numerous, and so many have borne the same Christian name, that their genealogy is traced with great dif- ficulty. Among the births recorded by the town-clerk between 1650 and 1670, six bore the name of John Wheeler.

APPENDIX.


George d. 1684, having had by his wife Katharine, Elizabeth, who m. Francis Fletcher ; Mary, who m. Eliphalet Fox ; Ruth, who m. Samuel Hartwell ; John, and perhaps other children. Of whom, John m. Sarah Larkin 1663, and d. Sept. 27, 1713, a. 70 ; she d. Aug. 12, 1725 ; they were parents of Samuel, John, Ed- ward, Ebenezer, and perhaps others. Edward was deacon, and father to Dea. David, whose son Ephraim was father to Ephraim now living. Children of the eighth generation, including the first George, now live on the spot where their first ancestor settled.


Joseph was a lieutenant in the militia, and otherwise distinguish- ed ; was twice married, and had several children, all of whom died young, excepting Rebecca, who m. Hon. Peter Bulkeley, and, after his death, Capt. Jonathan Prescott. Her mother, Sarah, d. 1671. He traded with the Indians, and had a tract of land grant- ed him in 1660, "especially for satisfying the Indians in their right," extending from Nashoba line at the north end of the great pond to Chelmsford.


Obadiah d. Oct. 27, 1671, a. 63; his wife Susannah d. 1650. They had Joshua, Obadiah, John, Josiah, Samuel, and several daughters ; of whom, Obadiah m. Elizabeth White 1672, and was father to Obadiah, Josiah, Samuel, Joseph, and other children, whose descendants I cannot trace.


Ephraim had a son Ephraim 21 years of age in 1650, and a son Isaac b. in 1642 ; but his history I cannot determine satisfactorily.


Thomas. Capt. Thomas Wheeler, commanded the compa- ny at Brookfield, August, 1675; he bought eight hundred acres of land north of Groton in 1674, granted to the Flints of Concord ; m. Ruth Wood; d. Dec. 10, 1676 ; his sons Thomas and Na- thaniel died the January following. Serjeant Thomas Wheeler had several children born between 1649 and 1664; and Thomas Wheeler, Jr., several between 1658 and 1673. These numerous families were connected, but how, is uncertain. Thomas, a grand- son, settled in Lincoln, and was father to Dea. Edmond, and an- cestor of others of the name there.


Timothy m. for his second wife, Mary Brooks; he d. June 7, 1687 ; she d. 1693 ; leaving no male issue. He gave the ministerial lot to the town, and is noticed in another place.


Joshua m. and had several children born 1660 - 1670.


William m. Hannah Buss 1659 ; he d. Dec. 31, 1683, having had Hannah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, William, John, and Richard ; of whom William d. May 29, 1752, a. 86, having had by Sarah, his wife, William, Joseph, Francis, Hezekiah, Nathaniel, and Eliz- abeth. Of these, Francis d. Nov. 1774, a. 76; m. (1.) Mary, who d. 1737, by whom he had Mary, Francis, Rhoda, Nathaniel,
