CHRISTIAN FRIENDS :

In a former connection, you have avowed your belief in the cardinal doctrines of our faith, and sustained a visible union to the Great Head of the Church. Bearing testimonials of good standing in the Church of Christ which we receive as valid, you are now to assume similar obligations, and enter into like engagements with us.

Do you therefore accept the articles of faith, and adopt the covenant of this Church? (The members assenting). In behalf of this Church, I, therefore, welcome you to its fellowship, and declare you entitled to all its privileges. And may the God of Peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the Sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ ; to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Regulations.

Ordinances.

1. The Lord's Supper will be administered ordinarily, in the afternoon of the first Sabbath in January, March, May, July, September and November; and baptism to children, ordinarily on the same Sabbaths before communion service.

Church Meetings.

2. A meeting of this Church shall be held annually on the second Thursday eve of January, at which the records of the preceding year shall be read; the catalogue of members shall be revised; the Deacons shall present accounts of all the moneys received, expended or held by them in behalf of the Church, during the preceding year, stating the time and manner of their collection and expenditure, which accounts are to be placed on file by the clerk ; and such other business shall be done as may be appointed or proper for said meeting.

The annual meeting, and all other meetings of this Church, for the transaction of business, shall be notified on the Sabbath-day preceeding.

Any meeting of the Church duly notified by the Pastor or by request of three members of the Church, shall be a regular meeting for business.

Standing Committee.

3. The Pastor and Deacons of this Church, together with five members chosen by the Church at each annual meeting, for the year ensuing, shall constitute a Standing Committee, whose duty it shall be to examine the qualifications of applicants for admission to this Church, to attend to matters of discipline, and bring before the Church such cases as in their opinion may require its action, and to do whatever business may be referred to them by the Church.

Clerk.

4. The Clerk shall be chosen by ballot ; and it shall be his duty to keep a record containing minutes of the doings of this church, its standing regulations recorded in a place by themselves, and a chronological list of its members, with the time of their admission, dismission or death, so far as he can ascertain the same.

20

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST.

.Admissions.

5. Persons who desire to make a profession of religion and to join this church, upon making known their request to the Pastor, or Deacons, shall be examined by the Standing Committee, and other members of the church who may see fit, and if approved, shall be propounded in the presence of the congregation two weeks; after which they may, by vote of church, be received, upon the Confession and Covenant being read, and by them publicly assented to, and baptism being administered to such as have not before received it.

Members of other churches in fellowship with us, applying for admission to this church, shall be propounded two weeks in the presence of the congregation, and may then be received by vote of church on reading of their testimonials.

When persons apply to unite with this Church, with letters of recommendation from another church, it shall be a standing rule not to admit such persons upon such letter merely, but every such case shall of course be referred to the Standing Committee.

Dismission.

6. All letters of dismission from this chinch and recommendation to another church in fellowship with this, shall be given by vote of the church, upon application, made known to them two weeks previous, shall be signed by the Pastor, or in his absence by the Clerk.

Absent .Members.

7. Whenever members of this church shall change their place of residence or of worship, it shall be their duty, as soon as they conveniently can, to apply to this church for letters of dismission and recommendation to some other church in fellowship with us, if there is such in their neighborhood ; and if they shall delay this application, more than one year after such change, letters shall not be granted unless special reasons satisfactory to this church are assigned for the delay.

Immediately after the annual meeting, it shall be the duty of the clerk to forward copies of these Regulations respecting absent members, to such as shall be found to have changed their place of residence or worship without applying to us for dismission ; and if such absent members shall disregard the communication, they shall be considered as guilty of a breach of fellowship.

Members of Other Churches.

8. No member of another church, residing in this city and accustomed to worship with us, shall be allowed to commune with this church more than one year, without applying to the Pastor or other members of the Standing Committee, for admission to this church, or making known satisfactory reasons for delay.

21

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST.

Indigent Members.

9. At each communion season there shall be a collection, to be disbursed by the Deacons of the church with advice of Standing Committee, for the comfortable maintenance of Indigent Members, and for defraying all necessary church expenses.

Discipline.

10. Whereas, gospel discipline is indispensable to the purity and well being of the Church of Christ, whenever any member of this church knows cause of complaint against another member for disciplinable offences, christian watchfulness requires of him to make known the same to the church through the Standing Committee, in order that the offender may be properly dealt with, and the offence removed ; provided however, that if the offence be of a private nature, the complainant ought to pursue the course prescribed in Matthew 18 : 15-17.

No case of discipline shall be brought before this church except through the Standing Committee, or after due application shall have been made, and opportunity afforded to them for presenting the complaint.

Discipline is the exercise of that authority, and the application of that system of laws, which the Lord Jesus Christ hath appointed in Ilis church.

The exercise of discipline, is most important and necessary, in order to remove offences ; to vindicate the honor of Christ ; to promote the purity and general edification of the church; and also to benefit the offender himself.

Benevolent Societies.

11. As the Gospel enjoins upon believers the duty of advancing by all means in their power the spiritual welfare and salvation of mankind; therefore this church deem the Am. Bible Society, Am. B. C. F. Missions, Home Missionary, Tract, Education, Seamen's Friend Societies, the Sabbath School Cause, the Am. and Foreign Christian Union, and Am. Miss. Association, of efficient worth in attaining this end, and as such entitled to our liberal contributions.

Collections shall annually be made in this church and congregation for each of the above named institutions, at such times and in such modes, whether by subscription or otherwise, as the Standing Committee of the church may direct.

At the annual meeting of this church, there shall be chosen a committee of seven, who shall appoint their own clerk, and whose duty shall be to make the above named collections, according to the advice of the Standing Committee, and pay over the same to the authorized agents of those

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST.

societies in Hampden County. They shall also receive the moneys collected at our Monthly Concerts, and pay the same to the County Treasurer of Am. B. C. F. Missions.

They may fill any vacancies occurring in their number, enlist other members, if they see fit, to aid them in making collections, and at the end of the year, shall by their clerk, present to the church at its annual meeting, a written report of their proceedings, with a statement of the whole amount by them collected for each object, which report and statement, if accepted, shall be placed on file by the clerk of the church.

Time for Examining Members.

12. The third Friday evening before cach communion Sabbath all who wish to join the church will meet the Standing Committee for examination and acquaintance, and shall receive a copy of the Confession and Covenant of the church.

Temperance.

13. In our opinion the use of ardent spirits as a drink, and the traffic in it as an article of luxury or diet, are inconsistent with the spirit and requirements of the Christian religion, and ought to be abandoned throughout the Christian world. Therefore, in admitting members to this church, we will act in accordance with this belief.

Religious Services.

Sabbath Morning-Preaching from notes.

Sabbath Afternoon-Bible Service for one hour. The Sabbath School is included in this. The Pastor is present with his class, and all the church and congregation are invited to attend and take part in the service.
