Part 1 | Part 2

You also place him under the watch and care of this Church, asking for him the enjoyment of its privileges, and the application of its means of grace, and promising to employ all suitable influences in your power to prepare him for full admission to the visible church on earth, and the church triumphant in heaven.

Do you assent to this as a true declaration of your faith and purpose ?

In view of these professions and engagements, I baptize this child (A. B.) into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. AMEN.

You have made a voluntary consecration of your child to God, and pledged yourselves to train him for the Lord. I therefore charge you, as you would secure the blessings of the covenant for your household, that you remember the promises this day made in the presence of many witnesses. The words that God hath commanded you, these shall you teach diligently unto your children ; you shall talk of them when you sit in the house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. Take heed, moreover, that you add to your instructions the power of a consistent Christian example.

Thus Abraham, the father of the faithful, entered into covenant with God for himself and his seed after him, and commanded his children and his household to keep the way of the Lord.

May you prove equally faithful, and may the blessing of Abraham's God be with you and yours forever. AMEN.

STANDING RULES. ADOPTED JUNE 29, 1857.

IV.

Persons wishing to unite with this Church by profess- ion, must be examined at a meeting of the Church pub- licly appointed for this purpose, and propounded at least one week before they can be received; and if within this time there is no objection by any member of this Church, they may present themselves for admission.

If no objection is made to any officer before that day, they will then be received in the form prescribed by this Church.

STANDING RULES.

VIII.

Members removing from this vicinity are expected to give notice of such removal to one of the officers of the Church. They are also expected to transfer their relation to the Church with which they may commune, within a reasonable time.

It is expected that members of other Churches, who may wish to commune with this Church for more than one year, will request a dismission from their respective Churches, and an admission to this Church, unless they give satisfactory reasons for the delay, to the Committee.

IX.

Whenever as individuals, we are convinced we have injured our fellow members, we regard it as an imperative duty not to wait for them to come and tell us our faults, but to go immediately and seek to make all suitable repa- ration, and to become reconciled to them.

x.

In cases of offence against us personally, or of offence against the general interests of religion known only to one or two, the rule in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew should be always observed : " If thy brother shall tres- pass against thee go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone." Till this is done in a Christian spirit, the offence should never be mentioned to another person. If the offending member in this private interview will not hear us, we are to take with us one or two brethren, that they may aid us by their counsel, and become witnesses to the manner and spirit in which we perform our duty, and the effect on the offender, and if possible, by their frater-

nal intervention, secure a reconciliation between us. But if he shall refuse to hear them, we are to tell it unto the Church.

When the offence is general and known to many, it is the duty of the Committee to notice it agreeably to the same rule,-first, one of them in private, and then with two others.

Offences that are very aggravated and scandalous may require a more summary process of discipline.

XI.

Charges to be brought before the Church against an offending member should be put in the hands of the Mod- erator, distinctly specified in writing, that he may advise of any mistake or neglect in reference to them, furnish a copy of them to the accused, and cite him to appear at a specified time and place, to answer to them before the Church, which shall be convened at the special call of the Moderator.

XII.

The Rules of this Church shall be read annually at the Preparatory Lecture next preceding the first Sabbath in May ; or at such other time as the Pastor may prefer.

XIII.

These rules may be altered or amended by vote of a majority of the members present, at any meeting of the Church called for that purpose.

GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS.
