MASSACHUSETTS OFFICERS IN COLORED TROOPS.
IX. LIST OF MASSACHUSETTS OFFICERS IN UNITED STATES COLORED TROOPS.
NOTE. This list includes officers of Massachusetts birth or origin who were commissioned in the United States Colored Troops as officially organized by the War Department. It does not include those commissioned by the Governor of Massachusetts in the colored regiments organized by the State - the 54th and 55th Infantry and the 5th Cavalry - as these will be found in the list of officers of Massachusetts regiments.
The present list has been prepared with great difficulty and is far from complete. No such compilation has ever been made at the Adjutant General's Office in Boston, and the chief of the Record and Pension Office at Washington has several times declined all requests to furnish such information from his department, or to allow it to be sought there. It is doubtful if any full record exists of the birthplaces of officers of colored regiments, although there are doubtless records showing the regiments from which they were taken, whenever they were thus transferred for promotion. Where such transfers were from Massachusetts regi- ments, it often appears on their rolls, though sometimes in inaccurate shape. But the many officers who were taken from civil life had probably no record made of their birthplaces ; and these instances can only be ascertained from local histories, and records of the Loyal Legion or other military organizations. Much private correspondence has also been required, but the total result is unsatisfactory.
