JANUARY 3. There were 156 marriages, 428 births, 231 deaths recorded in Milford in 1916.
JANUARY 5. School committee receives a petition signed by 16 citizens protesting against military training in Milford schools.
JANUARY 6. According to Treasurer Swift Milford expended $500,625.12 to conduct the various Town departments in 1916.
JANUARY 18. Old Mendon Chapter, D. A. R., at a meeting to- day made Mrs. Sarah M. Winship Tarbell, an honorary member. She is a resident of Milford, a real granddaughter of the Revolu- tion.
JANUARY 19. Thomas J. Quirk of Milford, elected to the prin- cipalship of new Stacy school.
JANUARY 28. The first marriage to be solemnized in the Pine Street Synagogue was today when Frank Plotnick of Framingham and Miss Frances Kulwinsky of Milford were married by Rabbi Max Cohen.
FEBRUARY 7. There were 14,819 Red Cross stamps sold in Milford during the holiday season.
FEBRUARY 22. The new George E. Stacy $80,000 granite school building, Spruce street, opened for public inspection.
MARCH 5. Selectmen elected at annual Town meeting were: John H. Cunningham, Dr. Thomas J. Nugent and Charles V. Waitt.
MARCH 9. At adjourned Town meeting an article calling for civil service for the police department was defeated, 130 to 25.
MARCH 12. At adjourned Town meeting it was voted to ap- point a committee to adjust salaries of Town officers, it being 23 years since that had been done. Hon. George F. Birch is chairman.
MARCH 21. Selectmen granted increase from 25 to 30 cents an hour in the pay of patrolmen.
MARCH 22. Webb Pink Granite Co. granted contract for $300,000 to furnish the granite for the Freer Memorial building in Washington.

MARCH 30. Capt. Pond of Co. M ordered to get his command mobilized in the State Armory on Pearl street and he has 92 men quartered there ready for call.
MARCH 30. Milford's "committee on public safety," formed in Memorial hall building with Judge John C. Lynch as chairman.
APRIL 4. Biggest demonstration in Milford since 1898 was given the boys of Co. M tonight. A street parade of 800 in which it participated, was reviewed by thousands. Exercises were held in Town hall.
APRIL 6. News that Congress declares war on Germany arouses Milford.
APRIL 10. Officers and members of Co. M left Milford today amid a big demonstration, for war duty.
APRIL 12. Town Clerk D. J. Sullivan received a card from President Wilson expressing thanks at the resolutions passed by Milford at annual March Town meeting, pledging loyal support.
APRIL 18. Huckins & Temple Shoe Co., shoe manufacturers, announce a 10 percent. increase in wages and a 50-hour week.
APRIL 22. The first Milford soldier to lose his life while on duty in the war is Private Matteo Calzone, drowned in the West- field river today. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Giovanni Cal- zone, 18 East street.
APRIL 30. Oliveri hall building, off East Main street, de- stroyed by fire.
MAY 1. Milford cast 1,413 votes at Constitutional Convention election. Judge John C. Lynch was one of those elected.
MAY 7. Milford women, under leadership of Mrs. Mary G. Hobart, formed a branch of the Red Cross. There were 200 women present and in the preliminary organization, Dr. Allen E. Cross, pastor of Congregational Church, presided. He was later elected chairman.
MAY 9. Milford & Uxbridge Street Railway Co. announces that on June 4 single fares will be increased from five to six cents.
MAY 12. Quarryworkers and granite manufacturers adjusted differences today by compromising on a 371/2 cents an hour rate.

MAY 18. "War gardens" are springing up all over Milford.
MAY 18. The Indian Club of Milford, tonight unfurled a huge American flag. U. S. Marshal John J. Mitchell of Marlboro, was the orator and Dr. Thomas J. Nugent, chairman of Selectmen, pre- sided.
MAY 19. Capt. W. G. Pond of Co. M returns to Milford to en- list men for war service.
MAY 20. The funeral of Private Calzone took place in Baptist Church this afternoon. Bearers were comrades of Co. M.
JUNE 6. Milford's registration of men between ages of 21 and 31, under the selective conscription plans for war duty, totals 1,239.
JUNE 15. Milford citizens went over the top in its subscrip- tions for Liberty bonds. Out of its quota of $260,000, they sub- scribed $338,350.
JUNE 18. Selectmen raised the pay of Chief of Police J. T. Murphy from $1,000 to $1,200 a year.
JUNE 18. Death of Private Farrell Lindsay of Hopedale, a member of Co. M, killed by a train at Chester.
JUNE 18. F. P. Lee notified that he has been designated head of the Milford committee in charge of Red Cross work.
JUNE 19. Class of 1917, St. Mary's Parochial High school held commencement exercises in Town hall tonight, with 17 gradu- ates, receiving diplomas from Rt. Rev. Thomas D. Beaven.
JUNE 20. A meeting was held in Town Hall tonight in inter- est of Red Cross work. At its conclusion a meeting of business men was held at which it was announced the Draper Corporation of Hopedale would give $10,000 toward the campaign and F. P. Lee of Milford will give $1,000. Teams were selected to canvass Milford and Hopedale for subscriptions.
JUNE 25. Dr. William J. Clarke and Judge Chester F. Wil- liams, both of Milford, and James Heffernan of Blackstone are ap- pointed by Gov. McCall on the draft exemption board. Milford is

JULY 20. Leo Edward Connors, 98 Prospect Heights, Milford, has the distinction of being the first man picked in the entire United States as a soldier to serve in the United States National Army. His number was 258 and was drawn by Secretary of War Newton Baker, at Washington. Connors is 22 years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Connors. George E. Fricker, also of Milford, who lives at 118 West street, was the second man picked for service by Secretary Baker.
JULY 23. Milford's quota for War service is 349 gross, 186 net.
JULY 31. Death of John J. Crahan, Milford's well-known ath- lete, former sprinter, wrestler and boxer, a native of Milford, aged 55

AUGUST 1. Milford milk dealers jump retail price of milk to 12 cents a quart today.
AUGUST 6. Malcolm W. Burnham, aged 23, of Hopedale, is the first man in the Milford division to be enrolled in the military ser- vice under the selective draft.

the selective draft. Leo Edward Connors of Milford, was the first to present himself for examination. He was exempted, however, for physical reason, although not claiming exemption. Alex Ptak of Bellingham was the first man passed and he claimed no exemp- tion.
AUGUST 17. Milford's share of State income tax given as $21,494.83.
AUGUST 18. Lieut. E. M. Crockett of Milford, designated as brigade quartermaster on the staff of Brig. Gen. Charles H. Cole.
AUGUST 24. The Boston & Albany Railroad Co. announces an increase in passenger rates, effective September 15. The 13-ride ticket for $1 between Milford and Framingham will be replaced by a 10-ride ticket for $1.
AUGUST 27. Rev. Samuel Dupertuis, pastor of Methodist Church, announces he is to serve in Y. M. C. A. War work in France.
AUGUST 30. Milford's tax rate announced as $21.
SEPTEMBER 20. The cider making plant of the D. E. Mowry Co. on Congress street destroyed by fire. The company reports a loss of $50,000.
SEPTEMBER 21. Milford gives hearty send-off to 75 young men who left Milford for war service this morning.
SEPTEMBER 24. Ladies' Auxiliary of Div. 7, A. O. H., sent sweaters and armlets to the Milford boys of 101st regiment at Camp Devens. They claimed to be the first Milford organization to send such articles to the soldiers.
SEPTEMBER 27. Milford youngsters held a garden exhibit in Dewey Hall.
OCTOBER 5. Milford's second quota for the war left Milford this morning for service, among whom were Principal Christopher A. Fitzgerald of the High school.
OCTOBER 5. Thomas J. Quirk, principal of Stacy school, chosen principal of High school to succeed C. A. Fitzgerald, at $1,500 salary.
OCTOBER 26. Thurber Medical Association has 64th anniver- sary banquet and subscribes $500 to the second Liberty Bond issue.

OCTOBER 28. Valencia Council, K. of C., dedicated a service flag with names of 23 members in the war.
NOVEMBER 6. At State election Charles W. Gould of Milford and Francis Prescott of Grafton, were elected Representatives.
NOVEMBER 9. Milford-Hopedale branch of Red Cross sends 121 Christmas boxes to France for the soldiers of Milford and Hopedale. Previously 174 individual boxes were sent by the branch.
NOVEMBER 22. Y. M. C. A. war work fund closed tonight with $6,777.07 subscribed.
NOVEMBER 23. Milford's committee on military service report 283 Milford men are in war service.
NOVEMBER 27. James J. Lawton named as Milford representa- tive on the Food Administration Board.
NOVEMBER 30. Miss Kathryn Ruhan, first Milford girl to vol- unteer for service as a Red Cross nurse, goes to a war camp at Charlotte, N. C.
DECEMBER 7. A triple tie resulted in the Midland League football results as Milford, Natick and Framingham High schools each won four and lost one game.
DECEMBER 13. Death of Maurice E. Nelligan, aged 62. He was a former Selectman, and business man, and was Superintend- ent of streets at his death.
DECEMBER 17. Drive for new members for Red Cross.
DECEMBER 24. Webb Pink Granite Co. announces a 10 per- cent increase in wages to granite cutters effective January 1 and another 10 percent. increase April 1.
DECEMBER 26. Valencia Council in its war campaign fund, raised $4,000.

JANUARY 1. Milford Lodge of Moose dedicate a service flag in its rooms. It contains the names of 19 members.
JANUARY 2. Red Cross membership drive resulted in 1,454 new members, and $1,464.
JANUARY 4. Milford Red Cross workers knitted 473 sweaters for soldiers in France.
JANUARY 5. It cost $283,686.57 to conduct the various Mil- ford Town departments in 1917.
JANUARY 5. Death of Oliver D. Holmes, aged 78. He was a constable of Milford almost 43 years, was born and always lived here.
JANUARY 8. Vital statistics for 1917 show 141 marriages, 436 births, 230 deaths.
JANUARY 9. Milford Selectmen put ban on all social gather- ings in Town hall in the interest of conservation.
JANUARY 14. Upon orders of James J. Storrow, State Fuel Commissioner, Milford business men shorten hours to conserve fuel.
JANUARY 16. By orders from Washington every industry in Milford will close down tomorrow for five days to conserve fuel. Close to 2,000 workers are affected. Further orders state that for ten successive Mondays after the five day order business must cease.
JANUARY 21. Milford public schools reopened today after a vacation because of conservation edict.
JANUARY 23. By the will of the late Mrs. Frances E. Colburn, formerly of Hopedale, Milford Hospital receives a bequest of $20,000.
JANUARY 30. Fire in Archer Rubber Co.'s factory, Central street, caused loss of $5,000 to building and contents.
FEBRUARY 1. Death of Sergt. Philip J. Callery of Milford, the first soldier from Milford to die on the battlefields of France. He was 26 years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Callery.
FEBRUARY 2. Death of Capt. James Monroe Mason, the oldest man in Milford, aged 90. He was the oldest ex-member of Milford fire department, joining 70 years ago. He was a Civil war veteran.

FEBRUARY 5. Extreme cold weather, the thermometer regis- tering in places 25 degrees below zero. With the shortage of coal and other fuel, the situation is very uncomfortable. A snowstorm upset all transportation.
FEBRUARY 6. All Milford schools ordered closed because of coal shortage.
FEBRUARY 11. Death of James P. Reynolds, widely-known newspaper reporter and prominent in fraternal societies, aged 41.
FEBRUARY 11. Maj. E. F. Fletcher Post 22, G. A. R., was 50 years old today and tonight its associate members tendered the veterans their annual banquet.
FEBRUARY 12. Milford exemption board receives notice today to send 26 more men to Camp Devens, Ayer, for military duty, on February 26.
FEBRUARY 17. Private Nelson G. Maynard of Milford is the second Milford soldier to die on battlefields of France, word being received here today.
FEBRUARY 23. Registration for March election closes with 2,530 male and 129 female voters.
FEBRUARY 25. Salvation Army reports $1,274.88 collected in their drive.
FEBRUARY 26. Fifteen men left for the front today.
FEBRUARY 26. Milford fire department members, town officials and citizens tender a complimentary banquet to Henry E. Rock- wood, who recently retired from the fire department after 54 years' continuous service.
MARCH 4. Annual Town meeting elects Dr. T. J. Nugent, C. V. Waitt and John H. Cunningham, Selectmen.
MARCH 6. Milford school teachers in a public printed state- ment deplore the low wages for grade teachers, $12.50 a week aver- age, and appeal for more money.
MARCH 8. At adjourned Town meeting Milford voters ap- propriated $245,217.13 for the year. Salaries of Town Clerk D. J. Sullivan were increased from $300 to $500; of Treasurer J. E. Swift from $600 to $1,000; Selectmen, $250 each; Auditor, $200;

MARCH 14. The large barn of Charles H. Metcalf, Congress street, with all its contents, totally destroyed by fire, causing a loss of $40,000. Two horses were burned, also three automobiles.
