Never seeking political office, Dr. Bangs is always interested in civic welfare, and his only election to a political office followed a nomination (of which he was unaware for several days) to the school committee in his native town. As a teacher in the public schools his effort was always to urge his pupils to fit themselves for the higher positions in life, and it is with great satis- faction that he has received many letters and words of appreciation in later years from the pupils of long ago. Having some capacity for organization work, he has been called to serve in many societies and organizations, frequently in a secretarial capacity, since he was eighteen years old. Seeking to extend the opportunities for higher education to the many who could not otherwise obtain them, Dr. Bangs became one of the organizers and a trustee of the University of Massachusetts, Inc. (not a State university), and organized the School of Pediatry, which was imperatively needed, as there was no such school in New England, and only six in the United States. To this and other departments of the university he has given freely of his time, and now serves as president. He is also a trustee of Limerick (Maine) Academy from which he graduated in 1882.
Dr. Bangs early became convinced that service was the chief demand of citizenship, and that worth to a community is measured by the ability to serve it. So, unblessed by wealth, he endeavored to compensate by liberality in the philanthropy of effort, and to give his best service to those community duties which he was called to assume.
The Old Home Week movement inaugurated by Governor Frank W. Rollins, of New Hampshire, ap- pealed strongly to Dr. Bangs, for in it he saw a means of returning to New England some of the resources of men and means of which the appeal of the West had depleted the East. He helped to organize and became the executive vice-president of the Massachusetts Old Home Week Association, of which the governor of the Commonwealth was president. He furnished the statis- tical studies, so widely copied, showing the great tide of migration that had poured out of New England in past generations to populate other States. He was also secretary of the New England Old Home Week Asso- ciation of which Governor Rollins was president, and had a good opportunity to see the great benefit of the movement as shown by the purchase of ancestral homes, the rebuilding of old churches, the endowment of the old schools and academies, and the general reawaken- ing of the feeling of appreciation of a sturdy New England ancestry in those who had left the old homes to seek their fortunes in distant States.
The development of the schools of the country held for Dr. Bangs a strong interest, and he has made a very extended study of the changes of government in our endowed schools in an effort to determine the cause of the success or failure of the schools established through philanthropy before the State had realized its full obligation to its citizens in providing the opportunity for all required higher education.
The story of the Swampscott settlement, as related by Dr. Bangs on the historical pages of this work, recalls
the fact that at a time when one of the houses rich in historic tradition was threatened with destruction, it was assigned to Dr. Bangs to gather the evidence to estab- lish or refute the traditions with historic facts. Six months of study convinced him that the house known as the "Old Humphrey House" now standing at No. 99 Paradise road, Swampscott, was without reasonable doubt, the house built by (or for) Deputy Governor John Humphrey, and that it was standing in 1637 and probably in 1634; thus identifying it among the oldest houses in New England and possibly placing it in the undertakings of the fifth year of the settlement of Lynn. Dr. Bangs is vice-president of the Swampscott Historical Society (Incorporated), which has purchased the Hum- phrey House and thus saved from irreparable loss one of the most sacred of our Colonial relics. He is also a member of the Lynn Historical Society. In 1909 he became a member of the Sons of the American Revolu- tion, and has served as the historian of Old Essex Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, of Lynn, since that date. On April 19, 1919, he was elected vice- president of the Massachusetts Society, Sons of the American Revolution, and after serving in that capacity for three years he was elected president in 1922.
In June, 1894, Dr. Bangs married Miss Eva A. Parcher, daughter of George and Emma Chase Parcher, of Saco, Maine. Miss Parcher was secretary of the Maine Board of World's Fair Commissioners, and trav- eled in New England and Mexico in 1892 in the inter- ests of the World's Columbian Exposition. They now reside in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Their union has been blessed with two children, a son, William Parcher Bangs, born March 29, 1900, now a student at Boston University; and a daughter, Althea Bangs, born August 27, 1904, and a student at the State Normal School at Framingham, Massachusetts.
REV. ALBERT VIRGIL HOUSE, of Danvers, Massachusetts, was born August 21, 1867, in Prince- ton, Minnesota, where his father was a home missionary. The family moved to Jowa when he was a year old, and when he was ten to Clay county, Kansas. After four years removal was made to Crete, Nebraska, where young House entered the academy connected with Doane College. He graduated from the latter institution, hav- ing taken one year of his college course in Beloit Col- lege, Wisconsin. For two years he taught in the acad- emy at Weeping Water, Nebraska. In September, 1891, he entered Andover Theological Seminary, at Andover, Massachusetts, from which he was graduated in June, 1894. He supplied the Congregational church in West Salem, Massachusetts, from April, 1893, until he grad- uated from the Seminary, when he was settled as pas- tor, being ordained June 20, 1894, and remained until 1903, when he was called to the pastorate of the Lake View Congregational Church, Worcester, Massachu- setts, and remained there until 1911. His next pastor- ate was with the Union Congregational Church, South Weymouth, Massachusetts, January 29, 1911, to October 1, 1914. On the latter date he became the minister of "First Church Congregational," of Danvers, Massachu- setts, where he is now in his ninth year of service. Dan- vers was formerly included within the limits of Salem, and was in early years known as Salem Village. The

BIOGRAPHICAL
church of which Mr. House is now pastor was origi- nally known as The Church of Christ in Salem Village, and dates back to 1672, when preaching was begun, though the church organization was not effected until 1689. The two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of preaching in Salem Village (preparations for the observance of which are mentioned in the church history of Danvers, prepared by Mr. House for this work), was duly celebrated in a commendable program covering the week of October 8-15, 1922, Mr. House giv- ing the historical address on Sunday afternoon, October 8th. Mr. House is much interested in local and New England history, and has spoken often on historical topics in Danvers and other towns.
RANSOM C. PINGREE, one of the foremost law- yers of Essex county, Massachusetts, has been a resi- dent of the city of Haverhill in that county since a boy of five years, and from the time his years permitted, he has been one of the active public workers of that city, and in numerous ways has aided in its development and upbuilding.
Mr. Pingree was born at Lewiston, Maine, August 23, 1884, and his ancestry is among the oldest in the New England states, he being ninth in direct descent from the founder of the family who settled in Ipswich in 1641. As above stated, when Mr. Pingree was five years
old his parents came to live in Haverhill, and there he attended the public schools and prepared for college, graduating from Harvard College in 1906 and two years later from the Harvard Law School. During the years he was studying, Mr. Pingree defrayed his expenses by reporting on the Boston "Herald," and through tutoring. He was also clerk of the Legislative Committee em- ployed in recodifying insurance laws. Thus early in his career he displayed those admirable qualities which have been an important factor in his present success.
Immediately after attaining his degree, Mr. Pingree engaged in the practice of his profession in Haverhill, and it was not long before he began to take an active interest in the public affairs of that city. In 1914 he was appointed city solicitor, which office he held for the two years following ; in 1917 he was elected a member of the school committee and was reëlected to this office in 1919. Since 1913 he has been a member of the board of trus- tees of the Haverhill Public Library, and is also a trus- tee of the Bradford Academy, and of the John Green- leaf Whittier Home Association.
Since 1911 Mr. Pingree has served as president of the Haverhill Boys' Club, and during the World War he was particularly active in the drives and other patriotic work. In his career as a public servant, Mr. Pingree has achieved a very enviable record, and in all the offices to which he has been appointed, he has always sought to discharge his duties in the most commendable manner.
