PIAC LIBRARY KORTE ADAMS MASS 1884
A Word with Our Patrons.
E greet you with our eighth edition of the directory from the TRANSCRIPT press, and a careful perusal will show how sin - cere have been our efforts to meet the requirements of the public, who rely upon it as a complete guide book of North Adams. The directory was first established by us in 1874, against the wishes, and without the support, of many who regarded it as useless ; and it was only by persistent efforts 'that the work has reached the point of being indispensable as a work of reference. Directory publishing is a special line of business ; requiring skill, perseverence and many years of experience to furnish a satisfactory work. Twenty years of continued experience therefore entitles us to respectful consideration.
Is north Adams in a Flourishing Condition?
Since the publication of our first directory in 1874, it has nearly doubled its population, and, according to our canvass, should have between 15,000 and 16,000 at present. The municipal manage- ment has improved in effectiveness. A letter carrying system has been established, new streets are annually surveyed, large and attractive business blocks, and hundreds of houses of the most approved modern type are being annually erected. Go to the rail- road depots and witness the life and stirring events of a day and you become at once impressed with the truth that North Adams is the great railroad town of Western Massachusetts !! and conse- quently offers superior inducements for manufacturers to settle here, for the sake of cheap transportation of their goods. The Arnold and Freeman Print Works and Hunter & Son are now erect-

ing large brick buildings on account of an increased volume of business. The new Water Works, the Electric Light Co., Horse and Electric Railway Companies, the Public Library, a branch of the Y. M. C. A., and a host of social and benevolent organizations have sprung into existence within fifteen years until North Adams finds itself at last verging upon a fully equipped city. Like the towns of the great West, it is impossible to predict its future ex- cept by the past. The growth of North Adams has been healthy and legitimate, on the basis of supply and demand, and not spas- modic or forced up for the sake of real estate boomers. Our brief retrospect of fifteen years is convincing proof that North Adams is "at the front," and has come to stay. In conclusion we will simply assure the public that we will continue in the future as in the past to increase the usefulness of the directory, and when the street system is more settled we will add a map to our work.
In simple justice we desire to say that the typography, press work and binding of this volume surpasses previous editions, and is creditable to the TRANSCRIPT office, where all communications for the directory may be addressed to us in future.
Faithfully and gratefully the public's humble servants,
R. S. DILLON & Co., PUBLISHERS.
