born in Tariffville, Conn. November 29. known as the 7Ist Pennsylvania. He was 1853. About a year later, his parents, with promoted to first lieutenant, was injured four other children, three daughters and in 1862. and soon afterward was discharged one son, moved to Holyoke and there young for disability. In 1865 he started in busi- ness in Springfield, as a contractor and builder. lle is a member of the G. A. R. On January 3, 1862. be married Caroline Whitney. Three children have been born of this marriage, Nellie Hamilton, wife of Moses Field of Longmeadow ; Edward T., and Caroline Wheelock, wife of Linwood Morgan.


Mccoy attended the public schools. lle was fitted for college at Stebbins Classical in- stitute. Springfield. entered Holy Cross college, Worcester, Mass., where he took the full course of classics and philosophy. Mr. McCoy then took the full theological course at Grand seminary, Montreal. P. Q .. Canada, and was ordained a priest at Christmas, 1879. at Montreal. Mr. Me- Coy's father. John. came to Connecticut about 1848 or 1850, and his mother, Mar- garet (Cassidy ) MeCoy, about two years later. The parents and the three sisters and one brother all came from County Armagh, Ireland.


TODD. ANDREW J., D. o. Agawam, Mass .. was born in Agawam, February 13. 1845. a son of Henry M. and Mary (Miller) Todd. llenry M. Todd was a native of Agawam, and a son of Jesse Todd. a native of North Ilaven, Conn. The early ancestors of this family in America came from Scotland. Ilenry M. Todd was a broom maker by trade, but in later years he became a far- iner. At one time he was leader of the Baptist church choir and a vocalist of some note. Andrew J. Todd attended the pub- lic schools of Agawam and Springfield high school. After leaving school he purchased his present place, which he has conducted very successfully. Mr. Todd is a member of Agawam grange and of the Congrega- tional church. On May 2, 1876, he married Mary L., daughter of John B. Cooper. Three children have been born of this mar- ringe : Mabel M., Edna J. and Gladys C. Todd.


WILKINS, GEORGE H., M. D., p. o. Palmer, Mass., was born In Amherst, N. II., Decem- ber 25, 1855, the second of seven children born to Aaron S. and Abby Wilkins. Dr. Wilkins is a descendant of Harry Wilkins. who was authorized by the general court of Massachusetts to erect a house and conduct a ferry across Neponset river, and to re- ceive a penny for each person carried over. Dr. Wilkins was educated in the common schools of his native town, and entered the Medallon Institute at Mt. Vernon. N. H. Ile was graduated from the New Hampshire Agricultural college in 1879, and then en- tered the New York Homoeopathic Medical college, from which he was graduated in RILEY, JOHN D., D. o. Mittineague, was born Mittineague July 2. 1856. a son of John and Anna A. (Sullivan) Riley. John Kiley was a native of Ireland and came to America in 1849, set- tling in this county. Ile was a paper ISS3. He began his professional career in Palmer, succeeding Dr. J. K. Warren. Dr. Wilkins is vice-president of the Palmer National bank, president of the Young Men's Library association, a member of the Thomas lodge F. & A. M., and of the maker and was in the employment of the Royal Arcanum. On October 22. 1889. Dr. Wilkins married Sadie Stanwood. of Brunswick. Me.


WADE, FRANK. D. o. Longmeadow. Mass .. was born in the city of New York, January 20, 1838, a son of Hamilton and Marion ( Wood) Wade. The family Is descended from Robert Wade, who came from Eng. land In 1630 and settled in Dorchester. Frank was educated in the schools of his native eliy, and there he also learned the carpenter's trude, which occupation he has always followed. In January. 1857, he came to Springfield. and in 1861 enlisted Mr. Rley married Nellie, daughter of Wil- in the Ist t'allfornla regiment, afterward lam O'Brien, of Mittineagle.


Southworth Co. for thirteen years. He now lives in South Hadley Falls, and is in the employ of the Whiting Paper Co. of Holyoke. John D. Riley was educated in the public schools of West Springfield, and after leaving school entered the employ Crosier Bros., of Mittineague, meat dealers. Mr. Hleland came to Wilbraham in 1502 and pur chased his present place. In 1873 he married Emma Briggs, of Lime Rock. MORGAN, MILA W .. p. o. Wyben. Mass .. was born In the town of Westfield in Is40. a son of Frederick and Persis ( Pierce) Morgan. His father was born in Spencer, Mass,, and was engaged in the whip busi- ness and farming. Milo W. has married twice. first to Laura A. Parks, who bore him three children (Ellen G .. Herbert E. and Edgar 1.) and second. to Barbara Thompson.


MCCRAY. ORRIN C .. p. o. Monson. Mass .. born was born in lampden. December 10. 1562. a son of David R. and Delia N. (Lincoln Met'ray. lle was educated in the schools of Hampden and Wesleyan academy at Wil- braham. In 18's he came to Monson and engaged in the teaming and trucking busi- ness, which he has since followed. in 1492 was elected assessor and served three years. In 1896 was elected selectman and for three years was chairman of the board. Mr. MeCray is also a member of Monson lodge. 1. 0. 0. F. On October 12. 1996. he married Allee E. Pease, daughter of Cal- vin S. and Julia E. Pease. They have one son. Carter C. McCray.


ALDERMAN, ERNEST 1 ... p. o. Holyoke, Mass .. was born in Chester. April 4. 1876. llis father. Warren L. Alderman, and bis grandfather. Norman Alderman. also were natives of Chester, hence were among the early settlers of that town. Warren L. Alderman married Alma Leech of North- ampton. He died in 1445. and his widow is still living. Ernest L. Alderman was educated in the schools of Mt. Hermon and after leaving school learned the meat


cutter's trade. In 1sos the City Market Co. was organized under the management of Alderman & Fisk. but soon afterward Mr. Alderman bought out Mr. Fisk's Inter- est and is now conducting the business alone. Mr. Alderman is a member of the Knights of Pythias and he was a member uf vo. K of Springfield. in service during the recent Spanish-American war and re- ceived an honorable discharge.


GORMAN. EDWARD J .. of Holyoke, was in County Down, Ireland, Decem- bor 25. IS63. and came to America with his parents. Philip and Elizabeth Harman. settling in Holyoke. He was educated in the llolyoke public schools, and afterward fonnd employment with the Farr Alpaca ro .. with whom he re- mained ten years. In 1893 he began to take an active part in Holyoke politics and became a known factor in political circles. He was city marshal in 1598. He now holds a position in the Holyoke fire depart- ment. Mr. Gorman is a member of the I. O. R. M. and of Knights of Columbus. In 1900 he married Katherine L. O bon- nell. They have one son. Edward Thomas Gorman.


SWEENEY. JOHN JOSEPH. D. O. Mittin- eague. Mass .. was born in Springfield. Oc- RYAN, TIMOTHY F., p. o. Holyoke, Mass .. was born in Milford. Mass .. April 20, 1957. a son of John T. and Ann (Coughlin) Ryan. His father was a native of Ireland and hns lived in Milford about fifty-five years. Timothy was educated in the schools of Milford, and after leaving school engaged in the shoe business. He came to Holyoke in September. ISSO, from Tannton. and started his present undertaking busi- nexx. Mr. Ryan is chairman of the demo- tuber 1. 1952. n son of Thomas and Nora ( McMahon) Sweeney, both natives of Ire- land. Mr. Sweeney was educated in Wash- Ington. Mass. and in Holyoke. After leav- ing school he was employed by the Merrick Thread Co. of Holyoke, and still later en- gaged in work connected with the B. & A. railroad. In 1870 he was employed by that company, and was appointed train dis- patcher in 14 3. Mr. Sweeney married Mary A. In 1886 Mr. Lynch married Anastasia Hardy of Westfield. They have one son, Francis I. Lynch.

LYMAN EDSON L., p. o. Holyoke, Mass .. was born in South Hadley, April 15, 1858, a son of Lorenzo W. and Sarah ( Williams) Lyman, and was educated in the public schools. Ile learned the meat business and started his present establishment about 1885. Mr. Lyman is a member of the Holyoke lodge No. 134. 1. 0. 0. F. In 1880 he married Margaret F. Ramage. ( Walker) Russell, and a grandson of William Russell, a native of Ellington, Conn. Ile received a common school education and then engaged in farm- ing. He is a member of Massachusetts militia. Mittineague, was born In Sutheld, Conn., November 20, Mass .. was born in Agawam, August 30, 1848, a son of William Pomeroy. a native 1840, a son of Justus R. and Lucia Os- of West Suffield and a carpenter hy trade, borne ( Flagg) Cooley, and a grandson of and who died in 1856.


Gideon Cooley, who came to Agawam in 1735. George obtained his education in the public schools of Agawam and Spring- field. Ile is now engaged in farming, has served as tax collector two years and was road commissioner in 1900. Hle is a mem- her of the Congregational church of Mit- tineague, and also of the Hampden lodge of Masons. On April 5. 1864. Mr. Cooley married Allce, daughter of Joel Daggett. ROY. J. ARSENE. D. o. Mittineague. Mass .. was born in Grandline, Canada, October 11, Sears. 1850. & son of Ephraim and Margaret ( Brouillitte) Roy, and was educated in the college of Werville and the English col- lege of Clarenceville, Canada. He learned the carpenter's trade and came to Mittin- cagne in 1869. In ISSS the firm of Scott & Roy was formed and has since its organ- ization done a large and successful busi- ness. They were the successful contrac- tors for the erection of the Springfield high schoul. Court Square theatre building. The- atre block. the French American college building, the Mittinpague school building. town of Agawam, and Grace church. Chico- pee. Mr. Roy was elected a member of the school committee in 1900 and is still serving in said capacity. On June 2, 1872. he married Elsie Lauviere, of St. Claire. Canada. They have two children living. Ida. a graduate of West Springfield high school (class of 1898). and Emil Roy.


His wife died January 15. 1900. James J. Carroll was educated in the common schools and then engaged in farming and dairying. He Is a member of the Foresters and has served as town constable for seven

SMITH, JAMES S .. D. o. Feeding Hills, Mass .. was born in Feeding llills. in the house where he now resides. January 15, 1449, a son of James S. (died in 1875) and Lorinda (Lay) Smith ( died in IS93), and was educated in the public schools of Aga- wam and Burnett school of Springfield. After leaving school he engaged in farm- ing on the farm where he is now located. The house he lives in was built in 1810 by Gibbons Lay. a blacksmith. Mr. Smith is a member of the Methodist church and is its steward. trustee and treasurer. On September 18. IST8. he married Anna L., daughter of Daniel Il. White. Five chil- dren were born of this marriage. Lorinda T., Herman W .. and Howard L. Smith, and two others who died young.

Mr. Charles is a member of the Masonic lodge and of the Grand Army of the Republic.
