Peabody Business Directory.

PEABODY is a large and prosperous town situated two miles from Salem and eighteen miles from Boston, and is intimately related to Salem in all its social and industrial interests. It is connected with Salem, Boston, Lynn and other centres by different branches of the Boston & Maine railroad. It is also connected with surrounding places by the Lynn & Boston Street Railway, and with Wale field by the Wakefield, Peabody and Salem Street Railway. It has many and varied industries, the most important being the tanning, currying and finishing of hides and sheep skins, glue making cloth bleaching, machine shops, thermometer manufactory, etc. The Peabody Institute affords, admirable literary advantages, having two libraries, the reference library being of extensive scope, and a course of free lectures is given every winter. These facilities, with the excellent schools of the town, render the educational advantages of peculiar value. It has an ample water supply (high service), from the beautiful Spring Pond, and an electric light plant established by the town. It has a population of eleven thousand, its people are full of enterprise and spirit, and its facilities for extensive manufacturing are unsurpassed.
