REPORT
Of the School Committee of South Scituate, for 1850-51.
Your Committee have endeavered to keep themselves well in- formed of the condition of the Schools, by frequent informal visits, and by careful periodical examinations. We may con- gratulate the town on the improvement of all our schools during the past year. A large, convenient and well finished School House has been built by the Fifth District; and its Winter School has derived great comfort and advantage from its accommoda- tions. Another equally as good is to be immediately erected in the First. Another is much wanted in the Third ; as the house its school now occupies is small, inconvenient, and out of repair.
It is important that every school house should be furnished with a clock, that the scholars may all know exactly when they shall be called upon to recite. It is found by experience that many are far more likely to apply themselves with vigor to their studies, when they can see the moment of recitation approaching. It is recommended to the several Districts to instruct their Pru- dential Committees to supply this want.
It is, by the law of the State, made the duty of Prudential Committees, " to keep the School Houses in repair, and provide all things necessary for the comfort of the scholars, at the expense of the District." This does not require a previous vote of the District, directing the Committee to put the house in proper order. If a window is broken, if a door has lost a hinge or a latch ; if the house needs washing, or ventilation, or blinds, or black-boards, chairs, shovel, tongs, water pail, dipper, &c., it is
