MIDDLESEX COUNTY EXTENSION SERVICE FOR THE TOWN OF LITTLETON-1939

The following is a report of the work of the Middlesex County Extension Service in the town of Littleton during the year 1939.

The dairy farmers in Littleton have been given assistance with their milk marketing problems and the understanding of the provisions of the Federal Marketing Order. Oliver A. Whitcomb has cleared additional acregae for the grow- ing of Ladino clover pasture, a new legume for this area. He is also growing Reed's canary grass on his low land. C. V. Flagg is also a successful grower of Ladino clover. The herd of Robert M. Lingham is in the Herd Improvement As- sociation. George Brown and Harold A. Whitcomb are mem- bers o fthe county dairy committee. Littleton has an increas- ing number of medium to large poultry farms. About twen- ty poultrymen were visited concerning poultry farm prac- tices, such as record keeping, disease control, marketing and rearing methods. Circular material and meeting notices on poultry were sent to those who have much poultry. Mr. Aaron Lund has been president of the Massachusetts Poultry Producer's Inc., during the year. Mr. John A. Kimball has been on the board of directors. Mr. Ralph Sawyer has been president of the Middlesex County Poultry Association. Mr. R. C. Cobb has assisted the Extension Service by furnishing chicks for sexing demonstrations and meat birds for dressing demonstrations. Mr. Harold N. Caldwell has assisted in the Extension Service poultry program.

118

Spray service information has been furnished to the fruit growers and general assistance rendered in their mar- keting problems.

Boy's and Girls' 4-H Club Work has been carried on during the year under the chairmanship of John G. Moran. Leaders for the year have been Mr. Robert Stuart, Mr. Mil- ton Jeffrey and Mr. Thomas Lawson of Groton. Thirty-two boys were enrolled in dairy, poultry, garden and handicraft clubs. The dairy boys are members of the club with mem- bers in Littleton, Ayer and Groton, under the leadership of Thomas Lawson, Groton. A final exhibit was held at a school assembly with an interesting program. Willis Gray was awarded a medal for meritorious garden work by the Mas- sachusetts Horticultural Society.

James Stuart was the outstanding dairy boy in Middlesex county in his second year of work. He won a six months old heifer as a special prize at Judging Day in Groton, was first in judging at Topsfield and at Eastern States Exposition. He won three firsts on his three animals exhibited at Topsfield Fair.

Ruth Ewing was the most active dairy girl in the county. She exhibited at Marshfield, Wehobeth, Topsfield and the Eastern States Exposition and received a prize at every con- test.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH

To the Board of Selectmen :

Gentlemen :

The Board of Health organized with Dr. J. D. Christie, Chairman and Hugh A. White, Secretary. Mrs. Mildred E. Powers was reappointed as Health Nurse and agent for the Board of Health. Dr. J. N. Murray inspector of slaughtering.

The number of contagious diseases was low as compared to other years with the exception of Whooping Cough. The fact that two new cases of Tuberculosis were reported and that there have been three deaths from this disease, leads us to urge all who are the least worried or suspicious to avail themselves of the T. B. Clinic, either locally or at Waltham.

The routine licenses for the pasteurization and the sale of milk and other foods were issued, although milk inspection has not been as thorough as we had planned.

In regard to the action taken at the last annual town meeting relative to the condition of the waters known as Caldwells pond and the Ice House pond, this Board employed the services of a reputable Sanitary Engineer and copies of

120

his findings together with his recommendations were sent to all concerned. The expert opinion being that this matter should be treated as a private and not a public matter.

Respectfully submitted, JAMES D. CHRISTIE, HUGH A. WHITE, JAMES L. MCCLELLAN,

Board of Health.

In an effort to bring to parents the importance of an early, sound, physical condition, a series of local "Well Child Conference" demonstrations were held through the summer and fall months for children of pre-school age. It is hoped that these conferences are the beginning of permanent "Well Child Conferences."

However, indications to date are most encouraging as parents have already shown great interest in the pre-school conditions of their children.

Forty children attended these conferences and were ex- amined by Dr. James D. Christie of the Board of Health.

Defects are as follows:

Major 15

Minor 9

No Defects 16

Corrections Made

Follow up visits are being made and will continue through the Spring.

Clothing has been collected and distributed throughout the year to adults and to children.

In closing my report, I wish to thank my nursing commit- tee and the citizens of Littleton for the kind co-operation given to me this past year. It is such co-operation which helps to maintain a good health program.

Respectfully submitted, MILDRED E. POWERS, R.N.

I submit herewith my annual report for the year ending December 31, 1939.

An extension of about 1000 feet was built on Roxbury drive in the Long Lake section this year.

Three new street lights have been installed, one each on Harwood Ave., White Street and on Shattuck St., at the new school.

There are now forty-six ranges installed, an increase of four over last year.
