Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

In some instances the pupil is taken from our High School and sent to a business college, or a preparatory school, which fits for some particular college. But in a large majority of cases, the scholar's leave because of the lack of zeal and perseverance, and the want of encourag- ing home influence.

We are pleased to notice, that next June a very fine class of scholars will graduate. We have watched them for the past four years with much interest, and we heartily congratulate them and their parents on their success in completing the course. The experience which they have undergone, must certainly inure to their benefit in future life.

ANNUAL REPORT.

At the close of the spring term, Mr. B. Porter, Jr. resigned his position as principal of the North High School and Mr. Henry M. Maxson, of Westerly, R. I., was engaged to fill the vacancy. We are convinced that both High Schools have done good efficient work for the past year.

Last year the town appropriated $ 14,000 for our District Schools, exclusive of the dog fund (so called). This ap- propriation, together with the dog fund, allowed only some of the largest schools in Districts Nos. 1, 4, 3 and 18 to run thirty-six weeks.

The increase of scholars has been so great for the past year, that Districts one, eighteen and some others, have been forced to erect and furnish additional school-room. Consequently we are obliged to ask for a larger appropria- tion this next year and would recommend the sum of fifteen thousand dollars, in addition to the dog fund, which sum will be actually necessary to run our schools the required number of weeks.

For our High Schools the sum of thirty-five hundred dollars was placed at our disposal. With this amount we have paid the old bills outstanding and the running ex- penses of the High Schools for thirty-six weeks, with the exception of three or four hundred dollars yet remaining to be paid. It is evident that in order to close the finan- cial year and be out of debt (debt caused by insufficient appropriation) that an appropriation must be granted which shall be sufficient to pay all outstanding debts and the necessary expenses of the next year. We would suggest, that for our High Schools, the sum of four thousand dollars be appropriated, with which sum the schools can be run the required time and be out of debt at the end of the year. The graduates of the past year were :
