Franklin.
FRANKLIN.
Franklin is situated near the extreme westerly portion of Norfolk County, and on the line of the New York & New England Railroad, which passes through the centre of the town and furnishes good railroad facilities, east to Boston 28 miles and westerly to New York, Baltimore and Washington. It has also railroad connection with Pawtucket and Providence 18 miles south, and with Milford, Hopkinton and other towns northwest.
The town was incorporated Feb. 27, 1778, and was previously a part of the town of Wrentham, which had been set off from Dedham about A. D. 1662. The name Franklin was given in honor of Benjamin Franklin L L. D., who in acknowledgment of the compliment sent a collection of books, 116 volumes, for the use of the inhabitants of the new town. This donation was received A. D. 1786, and became the nucleus of a Public Library now numbering about 4,000 volumes. Nearly 100 volumes of the original donation are still found on the shelves, and in good condition.
The business of the town is principally manufacturing, notably that of straw hats and bonnets, Franklin being one of the pioneers in this branch ; also woolen, cotton and felt goods, shoddy and rubber boots and shoes.
The surface is hilly and uneven. Soil generally light and gravelly, with some good farms. The elevation is such that good air is a characteristic of the town. The growth of the town has been quite rapid for the past ten or fifteen years ; the population has nearly or quite doubled in that time and is now about 4,500.
Dean Academy and good Public Schools, under charge of capable teachers, most of whom have been in them for a term of years, with the increasing business facilities of the place, make the town a desirable place for location to the active business men or retired capitalists.
