THE VILLAGE OF CHICOPEE FALLS.
THE village of Chicopee Falls is situated upon the south bank of the Chicopee River, about two miles from its junction with the Connecticut, four and a half miles north from Springfield centre, and one and one half miles rast from Cabotville. At this place, (before being di verted from its natural channel by means of a canal, ) the river flowed over a singularly uniform dam formed by the red sand stone, presenting to the view of the be- holder the beautiful falls known by the Indian name of Squanunganuck.'
In 1822, the proprietors of the Boston and Springfield Manufacturing Co. (since changed to the Chicopee Man- ufacturing Co.,) purchased of the original proprietor, Mr. Benjamin Belcher, all the water power upon the south side of the river, and a large tract of land for man- ufacturing purposes. Mr. Belcher had previously erect- ed a cupola furnace at this place, the business of which, amounting to more than 250 tons of castings per annum, is still carried on by his descendants.
The Chicopee Manufacturing Company have now in operation 4 large cotton mills, with a capital of 700,000 dollars, employing 200 male, and 600 female operatives, consuming 5000 bales of cotton, and manufacturing 6,000,000 yards of cloth per annum. Connected with their works is a machine shop, employing 20 men.
In 1836, the Chicopee Falls Company went into op- eration with a capital of 60,000 dollars, engaged in manu- facturing saws, fire arms, and machinery of various de- scriptions. These extensive works are now owned by the Ames Manufacturing Co., and furnish employment for from 75 to 100 mechanics.
The present population is upward of 2000. The vil- lage contains 200 dwelling houses, one hotel, two mar- kets, ten stores, a number of mechanic shops, and three churches - one Congregational, one Baptist, and one Methodist.
An elegant building is now being erected at an ex- pense of about $7000 for the accommodation of the pub- lic schools. It occupies a commanding situation, and will add much to the appearance of this beautiful village.

CHICOPEE FALLS VILLAGE.
Upon the north side of the river is the extensive paper mill recently purchased by the Chicopee Co. of Messrs. D. & J. Ames, for the purpose of improving their water power, which affords opportunity for a large increase of the business and population of this portion of the town.
