UNITED STATES ARMORY, SPRINGFIELD.

On the 2d day of April 1794, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of two National Armories, one to be located in Springfield, Mass. The other to be loca- ted at Harper's Ferry, Virginia.

Within the following year (1795,) the Armory in Springfield was in successful operation, and finished 245 Muskets during the year.

The importance and absolute necessity which experi- ence has shown for these Institutions, and the extreme difficulty in supplying their deficiency by Contract es- tablishments, particularly in time of War, together with the confidence and merit they have attained from the . whole country, has been so fully appreciated by Con- gress that they have continued to grant an appropriation annually to each of them.

The number of Arms with their appendages manufac- tured at the Springfield Armory from the commence- ment of its operations to the 30th of June-1846-is as follows, viz.

have been made with Flint Locks, and it is confidently believed that the arms made at this Armory since the adoption of the Percussion Lock, are not equalled in any other establishment in the world.

The expenditure for the Manufacture of arms and Ma- chinery for the year ending June 30, 1847, was $172,537, 65. The fabrications during the year were as follows viz. 14,300 Muskets at $10,56+ $151,039,10
