class of people are drawn here by them, and induced to settle. Evidence of this is seen in the schools, the houses, yards, lawns and flower-gardens. Formerly the children in the mills failed to attend school, although the law required it. A half-time school was therefore estab- lished, and these children induced to go. They work in the. mills in the forenoon, attend school till 4 o'clock in the after- noon, and work the remainder of the day ; those working by the piece earn nearly as much as they did before. There is also an evening school for older people.
The corporation prefer to sell lots only to those who will settle and build up the place, and to their employes. The latter are encouraged to build homes for themselves. Land is sold them at a very low price, and two-thirds the money to erect a house is loaned them for ten years, at a low rate. Twelve houses were thus built the past year, and fif- teen more soon will be, the lots having been purchased.
Capitalists might put up establish- ments here, where land is so cheap, and facilities for conveyance provided, with great profit.
The city is constructing a fire engine- house here, to cost $1,000. If it would expend a small sum on the side-walks, the value of taxable property would be increased, by new residents, and a just cause of complaint would be removed.
Sixteen Acres.
This is chiefly a farming community, and is six miles east of City Hall, and two miles south of the Indian Orchard station on the railroad. There are, per- haps, not more than a dozen houses clustered together, with a grist-mill, blacksmith shop, ward building for rot- ing and a school-house near by. Two freestone quarries are in the neighbor- hood. The people expect our horse rail- road will be extended there. And then, when the vicinity of Lake Como becomes too thickly settled, their land will be wanted for city lots and suburban villas.
