POPULATION AND VALUATION.
THE population of Springfield, by the census of 1865, was as follows: Ward 1, 3,775; Ward 2, 3,417; Ward 3, 4,051; Ward 4, 2,880; Ward 5, 3,470; Ward 6, 1,405; Ward 7, 1,494; Ward 8, 1,546 ; total, 22,038. A large number left the Armory before this census. Rev. J. W. Denton's recent careful canvass gives the number of families as 4,355, and classifies the foreign population thus : Irish, 5,045 ; Germans, 455; English, 470 ; other nationalities, principally French Canadians, 972. In 1860, the population of the city was 15,200; in 1868 (estimated), 30,000.
The Assessors report the present real estate valuation of Spring- field at $12,758,420, an increase of $2,516,880 over last year ; valua- tion of personal property, $5,110,810, an increase of $355,320; total valuation $17,869,230. The number of polls is 6,170, 485 more than last year.
