Springfield City Directory. 1873-74.
The Names of all members of a firm, as far as ascertained, are in smaller type under the name of the firm, and are also inserted in their place in the alphabetical list.
New Numbers have been applied on the streets, by the city, at the rate of one number for every twenty feet, exclusive of cross streets, and oftener when necessary, so that every separate store, office, dwelling, etc., or entrance up stairs from the street, has its distinct number assigned it. Where no numbers appear with some of the following names, because not on residences, it is hoped householders will soon have them put on. The necessary information may be had free, of the City Engineer, the cost of figures is small and the convenience and time saved would be great.
Even Numbers are on the west or north sides of all the streets.
Numbers Begin at Carew street, for Main and North Main streets ; at Cypress street, for Fulton; at the Boston & Albany Railroad, for Water street; at State street, for streets running into it; for other streets running north and south, numbers begin at the principal street from which they run. On streets running from Connecticut River or New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad across Main street, the numbers begin at the river or railroad, as on Bridge, Worthington, State and Union; and "East" and " West " are omitted from the names of these streets. On streets running from Main, but not crossing it, the numbers begin at Main. Other streets running east and west, not specified above, are numbered from the principal street out of which they run.
Court and William streets are numbered from Main towards the river, and do not have "West" prefixed. East Court and East William are distinct streets, and hence are numbered from Main, and "East " is not dropped from their names. For explanation of Abbreviations, see page 136.
