IPSWICH, MASS,

105

THE MANUAL.

The town had 137 volunteers in the service 20 July 1862. At the close of the war the town had furnished 375 soldiers (her full quota upon every call), and was credited with a sur- plus of thirty-three. There were fifteen commissioned officers.

When the cruel war was over, in 1869, the town selected a conspicuous and central location, and in 1871 erected upon the rock-ribbed earth, at a cost of $2800, a sightly granite memorial, "a single shaft, simple and plain," in commemora- tion of her patriot dead. The front panel, which faces the north, is inscribed :

ERECTED

BY THE TOWN OF IPSWICH IN MEMORY OF HER BRAVE AND LAMENTED SONS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES TO

THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WAR FOR UNION AND LIBERTY. 1861-1865.

The other panels record their names. On the plinth in front is the year of erection, "1871"; on the west, "Their Deeds We Cherish"; on the south, "Our Patriot Dead"; on the east, "Their Record Our Union."

It is worthy of remark in this connection that Ipswich Linebrook, a farming community of thirty-seven families at that time, furnished nineteen soldiers who were natives: E. P. Averill, L. C. Brown, A. T. Conant, C. W. Conant, G. W. Conant, C. Foster, E. K. Foster, R. R. Foster, S. L. Fos- ter, S. P. Foster, T. E. Foster, W. C. Foster, L. Howe, W. P. Howe, C. C. Lavalette, P. C. Lavalette, P. N. Lavalette, C. A. Mooar and D. M. Pingree; and seven who had been long- time residents : D. H. Andrews, Hiram Guilford, A. J. Phillips, A. H. Spiller, J. S. Spiller, R. P. Spiller and T. C. Taylor.

Let it not be forgotten that "Mr. Augustine Heard of this town, in conjunction with his nephews, Mr. John Heard, Mr. Augustine Heard, Jr., Mr. Alfred F. Heard and Mr.George F. Heard, in June, 1863, placed in the hands of trustees $10,000, to be applied for the relief of such persons belonging to this town as may suffer from sickness or wounds incurred in the service of their country in the present civil war, and for the relief of such persons as may be deprived of sup- port by the loss of relatives engaged in the like service." The town took action the 15th, which is recorded on page 237 of the town records.
