PREFACE
The Twentieth volume of the City Directory is issued to our subscrib- ers with a new, large scale map of the city, showing all new streets and in clearly readable size. The net population has not increased over 1921, but on the other hand it shows remarkable stability in the face of conditions in the vital industries of the city. The directory contains nearly 50% new or changed matter as compared with the 1921 issue. In the street directory the locations of all telephones are shown by a (*) The married women's names are inserted by the special method we have adopted, and there are now over six thousand of these.
Our thanks are tendered to all who have furnished information, and especially to our many subscribers and advertising patrons.

The number of names in the directory of 1922, excluding all matter immaterial to the census, is approximately 19,250 ; estimated number of children attending schools and under school age who are not included in above, 6,928. This gives a total of 26,178, in addition to which we have the constant floating population of above 1,000.

H., and 90 miles from Portland, Maine; on the Portland Division of the Boston & Maine Railroad; and on the most popular motor route between Boston, Portland, and the White Mountains.
