Early History of Directories

(Many centuries ago, long before we had Directories, it was the custom of persons having goods for sale to stand on the street corner and tell the passers-by of their wares. The stranger looking for his friend searched from house-to-house or in the market place, crying his question until some one answered.

(Next came the Town Crier who, hired to seek and give information, wandered through the highways and byways ringing his bell and crying "Hear ye, Hear ye" un- til his mission was completed. With the growth of population this picturesque ser- vice became unsatisfactory and expensive and was abandoned for information re- garding the community, gathered at stated intervals. And then, with the invention of the printing press, came the publishing of this important data !
