BEVERLY BUSINESS DIRECTORY, 1934
CROWLEY & LUNT'S CITY OF BEVERLY BUSINESS DIRECTORY 1934
Beverly, clean, healthful and beautifully located on the North Shore, with seven miles of the most charming views to be found on this continent, recom- mends itself to all classes of manufacturers and business men on account of its first-class rail and water facilities and equitable freight rates to all shipping points. Its continuous growth proves it to be the coming city of this part of the Massachusetts coast. With a valuation of nearly $50,000,000, within its limits are scores of palatial estates, all year round, or summer villas chosen by the wealth of the nation because of the sheer beauty of this coast. The manu- facturing industries comprise machinery, shoes, oil, oiled clothing, iron foundries, mattresses, planing mills, grain elevators, electric works, etc. The shoe industry, established more than a century ago, pays a large annual wage.
The United Shoe Machinery Corporation occupying one of the largest rein- forced concrete factory plants in the world and employing 5,000 expert me- chanics, pays a wage of over one and one-half millions per year. The Gulf Re- fining Company has its New England terminal here and docks its large steam- ships running from Port Arthur, Texas. Spur tracks of the Boston and Maine Railroad connect with all the wharves. Population of Beverly, 1934 estimated about 30,500. Eighteen miles from Boston on the Boston & Maine Railroad; Eastern Mass. Bus and Street Railway connections to all nearby points. Su- perior harbor. Three banks. Daily newspaper. Superior fire department. Good sewers. Super-lighted streets. First-class public schools. Good hotels and theatres. Public school playgrounds costing over $50,000. Modern bath house at Oceanside Park.
