Cost of City Directories

There is a necessary fixed cost in production of a Directory. The City does not pay for it - the subscribers do.

If there were only ONE sponsor he would necessarily bear the whole cost.

If there were 1,000 sponsors each would bear 1/1,000 of the cost.

MORAL: To keep directory costs DOWN and directory service UP, do your share. Don't be a Borrower - Be Fair.

Merchants referred to as "Borrowers" of the Directory unthinkingly injure themselves in the public estimation. Someone else has to pay for it for them.

A Directory Good Enough to Use is Good Enough to Advertise in.

BEVERLY CITY DIRECTORY, 1950

DIRECTORY THIEVES

OFTEN OPERATE UNDER THE GUISE OF BORROWERS

Please !

Do Not Allow Your CITY DIRECTORY

To Be Taken From Your Office

IT MAY NEVER COME BACK TO YOU

A Growing Percentage of Directories are Stolen Each Year and It Costs You Money Every Time You Loan It.

The Lending of Directories is responsible in large measure for the increasing cost of Directory Service.

This is due to the following reasons :

There is a fixed labor and material cost which must be met by the publishers in the compilation and printing of the Directory of your City.

This cost must be absorbed by the subscribers - be they one - or be they 5,000.

If there were but One Subscriber to the City Directory - the one subscriber would of necessity have to absorb The Whole Cost.

If there were 100 Subscribers - each one would have to absorb one 100th Part of the Whole Cost.

If there were 1000 Subscribers - each one would have to absorb one 1000th Part of the Whole Cost.

From which it is obvious that the Greater the number of subscribers - the Lesser the cost to each.

It is also obvious that the Lesser the number of sub- scribers - the Greater the cost to each.

Every time you loan your City Directory the Less Necessity there is for the Borrower to Subscribe for the Service.

More Borrowers result in Fewer Subscribers which means Increased Cost.
