...................................................................
Comparisons made by a Spring- field, Mass., special committee found that for every full page of names in the
City Directory
there were only 8 names in an- other - quite commonly referred to - book of reference.
The argument that there exist- ed any substitute for a good city directory failed signally.

OF COURSE ADVERTISING COSTS MONEY
One of the stock alibis of persons who do not adver- tise or register their business strongly in the Directory is that advertising is an expense.
Of course it is. So is window trimming, lighting, heat- ing, telephone service, postage, rent, cost accounting, price tags and almost everything else that helps to sell merchandise or service.
Yet no business man attempts to get along without these necessities. And most of them are advertising in one form or another.
Attractive windows are effective advertising only to those who pass the merchant's place of business. An in- viting interior, good lighting arrangement and price tags reach only those who come through the door.
-
But no merchant who wants to maintain even his present volume of business, to say nothing of increasing it, can hope to continue for very long, in the face of adver- tised competition, without some aggressive program to at- tract NEW customers-and when getting them also serving
