This enterprising and accessible city, located on the picturesque "North Shore," incorporated as a town in 1668 and as a city in 1894, is 18 miles from Bos- ton, and a forty minutes ride on the eastern division of the Boston & Maine Rail- road. It is very attractive, either as a place of business or residence. The popu- lation is about 18,000. It is connected with Salem and Boston by nearly forty trains a day, and with Salem, Gloucester and adjoining towns by well equipped street railways. The most important industry is the manufacture of women's and children's shoes, which is carried on to a very great extent. Many other important and successful manufacturing concerns are located here. The Board of Trade is pursuing a very liberal and public spirited policy by the erection of buildings suit- able for manufacturing purposes, and by other means calculated to induce capital- ists and mechanics to locate here and take advantage of the business facilities so abundantly presented.
