Library patronage is down

IC

Continued from page 1 age at other area public libraries in Beverly Farms and Danvers confirms that many regular patrons of the library's main branch are turning elsewhere for reading material.

But not everyone is moving on.

"It doesn't really bother me," said Scott Woods, a student of North Shore Community College, which occupied the Hardie building before moving to Danvers last fall. The college maintains its Sohier Road building.

"As a matter of fact, I was taking classes here last year," Woods said. "I'm in here two or three times a week. I've had to go to other libraries a couple of times when a book I wanted was out, but it really isn't much of an inconvenience."

Except for chilly offices and drafty windows, Scully said patrons and employees have adapted "rather well" to the move into the Hardie building, which is expected to be the library's home through July 1993.

For customer convenience, Scully said, reference and children's book sections are on the main floor of the building.

"The only thing that's different is people can't browse in the stacks," Scully said. "No one can comprehend why we can't let them down there, but we can't because of regulations for handicapped ac- cessibility to public places."

About 90 percent of the library's 140,000 volumes are in closed stacks located in the basement of the Hardie building. Because the basement shelves are only 20 inches apart to conserve space, Scully said the stacks violate guidelines for wheelchair accessibility required to be open to the public.

Instead, Scully said, all patrons must ask librarians to fetch books they may want after looking them up in the computer catalog.

Across Essex Street, the library building has been gutted to make way for interior renovations that Scully said will be in keeping with the original style of the 13,000-square-foot structure built in 1913.

While windows in the existing three-story building will be replaced, Scully said original window casings and doors will be preserved.

Scully said contractors also will try to preserve the marble foyer and stairway, as well as install ceiling and table lighting reminiscent of the library's original fixtures.

The rear wing of the library has been demolished and half of the addition's foundation has been dug. Clerk of the Works William Capone said 135 square yards of concrete will be poured Friday.

When complete, the library will have 54,000 square feet of space, including a ground-level children's room and a public function room for library events and community programs.

Manzi resigns as town accountant

.

.

TOPSFIELD - The Board of Selectmen Monday night voted unanimously but "with deep regret" to accept the resignation of Town Accountant Paul Manzi. Manzi has worked for the town for the past 31/2 years.

Manzi, who earned $26,000 annually, will leave on April 17 to take a job as Taunton's city auditor at a salary that is almost double his current pay,

according to Selectman Paul Nowak.

· "It's very disappointing to see him leave. We've become very dependent on Paul," Nowak said.

Selectmen appointed Manzi's assistant, Bayne Demerritt, as interim town accountant, and in- creased her pay to $11 an hour. They did not state what her present salary is. They added they intend to advertise immediately for Manzi's replacement.

Dog licences available at town clerk's office

BOXFORD - Dog licenses for 1992 are being issued at the Box- ford town clerk's office.

Licenses may be purchased at the town clerk's office from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Monday through Thursday. They may also be ob-

tained through mail by sending $10 for male and female dogs and $5 for neutered male and spayed female dogs.

Mail orders must include de- scriptions of the dogs, owners' tele- phone numbers, proof of current.

rabies vaccination and neutering or spaying.

Boxford has a penalty for li censes issued after June 1. Pleas call the town clerk's office at 887 8181 for more information.

Boxford Republican Committee to meet April 15

1 1

BOXFORD - The Boxford Repub- lican Committee will meet Wednes- day, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Boxford Community Center.

The meeting will establish. the

and

HOUSE GUIDE.

The Circulation is more than double of any ordinary Directory.

It goes directly into the homes and families.

It is read by the ladies and their friends as well as the men.

The advertisements are opposite reading mat- ter. It furnishes a list of the ladies to any who wish to send notices to them alone.

It is not so large as a directory printed in coarse type, but there are as many names and most of them are printed twice. It contains all the features of a directory except the occupations.
