INSTRUCTIONS TO KEY HOLDERS.
Alarms to be given from the box nearest the location of the fire.
Do not give an alarm for a fire seen at a distance, unless assistance is called for.
To give an alarm, open the door, pull the hook to the bottom of the slot once, and let go. Each box contains a small bell which,if heard before you pull, indicates that an alarm has been previously given, and by listening at the box, you will learn the number of the box from which the alarm was given, but in no care will you pull the book while the alarm is striking. After giving the a arm, remain at the box, so as to direct the firemen to the fire. Be Sure that you lock the box before leaving it.
Citizens are requested to inform themselves where keys to the signal boxes are kept, signs suitably in- scribed being placed over each box giving the requisite information.
INSTRUCTIONS TO FIREMEN.
First alarm will be given by strik- ing three or more rounds.
Second alarm will be given by repeating the first.
Third alarm will be given by strik- ing three blows twice on the gongs and bells.
General alarm will be given by striking three blows three times.
In cases where hook and ladder companies only are wanted, the call will be given by striking five blows.
Companies not required to re- spond to first or second alarms will be notified of the extinguishment of the fire by two blows on the gongs,
that their services will not be needed and that orders have been given to "make up." Should an alarm be given from any box while a portion of the departmentis engaged at a fire, the apparatus not in service will respond.
