PREFACE.
IN giving to the public. volume twenty-one of the Cam- bridge Directory (being volume, nineteen, according to the old numbering), we proceed to correct an error in reckoning, ex- isting from the year 1848, and one of later date. The follow- ing brief outline will be historically interesting, besides fur- nishing the needed corrections.
The first number of this work, published by James French, in 1847, was styled " the Cambridge Almanac and Business Di- rectory, " and although it did not give a list of the inhabitants, with their residences, it embraced so much local information in sixty-eight pages, immediately after Cambridge became a city, that it deserves to stand at the head of the series. In 1848 , John Ford published the work, under the title of " the Cambridge Directory," which contained a general directory of citizens, and a business directory, making 112 piges besides advertisements. This should be reckoned volume two. Mr. Ford published the work for nine years,- seven volumes under the title of "the Cambridge Directory and Almanac," in 1849, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, and one- 1857, as "the Cambridge Directory," since which it has gone by that name. In 1859, John D. Baldwin published the elev- entlı volume; in 1860, Thurston, Miles & Pritchett thie twelfth; and in 1861, Thurston & Miles the thirteenth. In July 1863, George Fisher published the fourteenth, for 1863-4. By inadvertence, it was numbered the same as its predecessor of 1861, twelve. It was doubly valuable, however, as contain- ing a list of the Cambridge Soldiers in the War for the Un- ion. The present publisher began his work with a large sized 12mo. for 1865-6, and received such encouragement, that it has since been issued in royal octavo form,- viz. for 1866-7, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1871, and the present volume, the twenty first. As the work is of full age, it shall speak for itself. Thus saith the historian, A. J. Coolidge, Esq. who takes much pains about our city affairs.
The present editor and publisher, will hold himself ready to correct former mistakes in this annual. If some of the local newspapers shall do likewise, they may, thereby, increase their fame for critical integrity. We have endeavored to collect all the facts contained in this work, from original sources. Several boarding-house keepers, however, have re- fused to give us the names of their boarders, saying that the boarders did not wish to have their names inserted in the Directory, being transient persons.
Two of the canvassers, who have been employed this year are residents of Cambridge, and two reside in Boston. If they have been faithful according to their ability, and done their duty, the list of names will be found full and accurate.
Many thanks are due for favors and polite assistance and patronage. These things will be remember d, and ever lighten our toil in the future compilation of the work.
D. DUDLEY.
