PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE AND WATER.

PATENT IMPROVED

PATENTED FEBRUARY 12, 1856,

Was awarded the first Prize and Diploma at the Albany County Fair, the fall of 1856. Also, a Diploma at the Middlesex Mechanic Association, at Lowell, 1857.

I put it on over Boards, Plank, Tin, Shingles, Steep or Flat Roofs.

The subscriber is now offering to the citizens of Lowell and vicinity, the Improved Mastic Roofing, which, in view of its low cost, easy application, great durability and perfect adaptation to any cli- mate, from its expansion and contraction by heat and cold, unquestionably far excels any other roofing ever uscd, tin and slate not excepted. It can be readily applied to roofs of every description, either steep or flat, and is superior to anything ever before discovered for Steamboats, Railroad Cars, Foundries, &c., &c. It may be put over old shingles without removing them. This Cement applied to old tin roofs not only renders them impervious to water, but effectually prevents rust, thus ren- dering it superior to all other preparations as a covering for leaky metallic roofs.

ETTA

SAMUEL COOPER,

Late Chief Examiner in the U. S. Patent Office,

PROCURES PATENTS IN THIS AND FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

His long official connection with the Patent Office has rendered him fami- liar with its rules and practice, and with the history of invention in this and other countries; and this experience, with the frequent visits which he pro- poses making to the Patent Office, justifies him in saying that his Agency will offer to inventors all the advantages of one located in Washington, and, in addition, those which result from a residence in the midst of mechanical and manufacturing industry.

Advice given upon all matters relating to the validity, &c., of patents, the novelty and patentability of inventions. Specifications and drawings pre- pared, - Caveats filed, - Reconsiderations procured of applications that have been rejected upon imperfectly prepared papers, - Cases of interference, and applications for extension and re-issue prosecuted, - and in general, all business connected with the Patent Office transacted with care and prompt- ness.

British and other foreign patents procured, through prompt and confiden- tial agents in London and Paris.

Persons residing at a distance may obtain all necessary information, and have their business transacted, by writing to the subscriber, without the trouble and expense of a visit to Washington.

He begs leave to refer those unacquainted with him to the following testimonial :

From Hon. Chas. Mason, Commissioner of Patents.

U. S. PATENT OFFICE, FEBRUARY 28, 1855.

I take great pleasure in stating that during the time I have been acting as Commis- sioner of Patents, SAMUEL COOPER, Esq., of Boston, has been engaged as Solicitor, and has been in that capacity in constant correspondence and intercourse with the Office ; he has evinced a thorough acquaintance with the Patent Law, and with the rules and prac- tice of the Office ; a close attention to the interests of his clients, and a marked candor and courtesy that have rendered the transaction of business with him a pleasure. I have no hesitation in stating that I regard him as one of the very best agents for the transao- tion of business with this Office with whom I am acquainted.

PALMER'S

This world renowned Invention still retains its high position. It is worn by upwards of 3000 individuals in the United States and Europe, with astonishing success. At the World's Fair, in London, the award of the GREAT PRIZE MEDAL was unanimously conferred by the Royal Committee, over thirty-five competitors. The " Palmer Leg" is an exact fac-simile of the natural leg, and with it, the pa- tient is enabled to walk immediately upon its application, with as- tonishing ease. The leg is applied to the shortest and tenderest stump with entire success. The Palmer leg is stronger, lighter, and more durable than any Artificial Leg made. Wherever it is ex- hibited, a first class Medal is awarded. At the late Fair of the American Institute, 1857, New York, the following award was given by the Judges : -

Best Artificial Leg. Palmer's Artificial Leg still retains its su- periority over all others. Gold Medal, Certificate, and Diploma awarded.

D. M. REESE, M. D., Prof. I. M. Carnochan, M. D., Prof. H. G. Cox, M. D., Judges American Institute, twenty-ninth annual Fair, 1857. '

The Judges at the late Mechanics' Fair, at Lowell, also awarded the only Gold Medal, to Palmer's Leg.

WHEELER & WILSON'S MEDAL FAMILY SEWING MACHINE,

The unanimous favor which has attended the introduction of Wheeler & Wilson's FAMILY SEWING MACHINE, is sufficient evidence of its excellence. It is needless now to say, that this useful instrument is becoming a domestic institution ; the fact is recog- nized by its successful use in thousands of Families in every rank of life. To those who have hitherto refrained from availing themselves of its advantages it may not be amiss to say, that its utility is not a problem to be solved, but a success already realized. The highest testimony is constantly offered, confirming this verdict, which has given this in- strument so wide and so enviable a reputation.

This Machine is conceived on a principle ENTIRELY ORIGINAL, being specially and admi- rably adapted to the most perfect work on every kind of material; and having been sub- jected to a three years' test of the most searching character, by Families and in various branches of manufacture, with distinguished success, it is believed that in all the great points requisite to a complete and practical Sewing Machine, it cannot be approached in excellence.

Among the undoubted advantages it possesses over all others, may be named the follow- ing : -

1st. Its simplicity of construction, and consequent freedom from derangement and need of repairs.

2d. Its unexampled rapidity and ease of operation.

3d. Its noiseless movement.

4th. The great variety of purposes to which it can be applied, which can be achieved by no other mechanical means. And

5th. The pre-eminent BEAUTY and DURABILITY of the work.

This Machine, in a variety of styles and sizes, is in operation and for sale at the office and wareroom,
