A long needed improvement has been added to the library by the installation of water. A book shelf con- taining twenty-five books has been placed in the library, the selection of books was recommended by the Ameri- can Library Association and the librarian of New York City Public Library as best adapted to school children in the first to eighth grades.
The hours of opening evenings has been extended one half hour on account of post office closing at 6:30 P. M. Evening hours now are: 6:30 o'clock to 9 P. M. in- stead of 7 o'clock to 9 P. M. as formerly.
Upon the recommendation of your trustees in 1920
47
TOWN REPORT
the town increased the appropriation from $500.00 to $750.00. Every cent of this increase has been spent for the purchase of new books. The wonderful increase in the circulation of the library since that time we attribute almost wholly to that fact as evidenced by the following circulation statistics :
Circulation 1918, 6,838. Circulation 1921, 11,200. Circulation 1919, 7,437. Circulation 1922, 11,513.
Circulation 1920, 8,689.
We therefore recommend an appropriation of $750.00 for the current year.
With the funds which by vote you provide your trus- tees the wherewithal to maintain your library your trus- tees aim to have the library render an efficient service to all of our citizens, and to provide the best kind of books of interest and benefit it is possible to obtain. The road to knowledge can only be travelled by those who read to learn.
The American Public Library is the greatest means of providing self education that all people of any coun- try ever had.
When opportunity for schooling ceases, the library provides the way for self development to any one who wishes or is willing to seek the service it offers.
Merrimac has always set its standards high, may they ever be maintained.
Respectfully submitted.

TOWN REPORT
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MUNICIPAL LIGHT BOARD
The Municipal Light Board herein submit their nine- teenth annual report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 1922.
The past year has been the busiest since the year the plant was installed with the extensions and chang- ing poles on the new State road and an addition of eighty- seven light services and two power services.
On the extension to the lake twenty-two services. have been connected with more to come in the spring.
On the extension to Birch Meadow five services have. been connected up to this date.
December 1 we made a reduction in the price of lighting which averages about 8%. The average price of power remains about the same as before, for with no. service charge the price was about as low as it can be sold at the present price of production.
The new method of charging every . customer the. same price for the first stated number of K. W. H. has become almost universal and without doubt is the fair- est method.
In compliance with the law the manager has fur- nished the board with the following estimates of expense and income for the ensuing year :
Expense
Gross expense of operating,
$17,000.00
Interest,
80.00
Depreciation, 3% on $46,161.01,
1,384.83
Bond payment, 500.00

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF WATER COMMISSIONERS
The Board of Water Commissioners herein submit their nineteenth annual report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 1922.
We have added twelve new services during the year making the total to date six hundred and seventeen.
There are thirty-six services not in use or two less than December 31, 1921. We also laid two service pipes across the new State road at Saunders Hill to house lots on which they have not yet built. We also had to install a new vacuum pump besides the new boiler which has been in operation since March 2, 1922.
The increase in the appropriation called for is more than accounted for by the increase in the note and inter- est account of $857.50 while the increase in the appro- priation called for is $793.29.
