TOWN REPORT

Report of Public Library

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

We submit our annual report as Trustees of your public library for the year ending December 31, 1930.

This year has seen the transfer of the library to our new building, which was formally opened by dedicatory exercises on the evening of April 11th. The munificence of our benefactor can now better be appreciated an in recognition of his generosity your Trustees recommend the formal adoption of the: name of the Thomas H. Hoyt Memorial Library.

There have been 13,552 volumes in circulation during this calendar year. The monthly deliveries. were as follows:

From the opening of the new library till the end of the year the volumes circulated totaled 10,938; this represents an increase of more than 55% over that of the corresponding period of the preceding year. This increased circulation, together with the more general use of the library for reading purposes, is very gratifying to your Trustees and appears to. justify our greater expenditure for books during the past year.

76

TOWN REPORT

Report of Police Department

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen : Gentlemen :

As Chief of the Police Department of the Town of Merrimac, I hereby submit the annual report of the Department for the year 1930.

The past year has brought to the Department an increase in routine business, the motor vehicle traffic being our greatest problem. I am glad to say the number of serious accidents has not increased over previous years and feel this may in part be ac- counted for by closer supervision and checking up at the several danger spots in our highways.

We successfully handled a large crowd during the Tercentenary celebration without accident and I feel that the work of the members of the Depart- ment has been efficient.

Our Court cases have increased nearly thirty percent over 1929 and I feel that the penalizing of wilfully negligent drivers has a tendency to cause more care to be used by others on our streets.

We have moved into our new quarters and the carrying on of the work of the Department is much more pleasant and business like. A large number of compliments have been given the Town for sup- plying these new quarters where some privacy may be given to cases and parts of our work that essen- tially need it.

TOWN REPORT

Report of the Merrimac Town Forest Committee to Jan. 1, 1931

This year there have been set out 2,000 pines. 1,000 white and 1,000 red pines. This makes 37,- 500 trees set to date. Fifty trees have been taken from our forest and set out along the roadside mak- ing 130 in all. The brush has been removed from six or more acres.

The construction of the new road on Church Street this year has taken off a corner of the forest land and so changed the roadside bordering the Town Forest. Your committee decided it would be unwise to spend money for a wire fence so have re- paired the stone wall instead and purchased a gate. Extra work has been done on cutting wood and bushes to help provide employment.

In the year 1929 there were appropriated for Town Forest $225.00.

There was paid out for labor on forest

This made the cost of the forest, above pur- chase price $458.02.

The appropriation for the Town Forest this year was $350. We have returned this amount and have a balance in favor of the forest account of $143.75 making the cost to date above purchase price $314.27.

In the six years since the establishment of the forest it has cost the town a little over $50.00 a year for maintenance. We have on hand the value of 30 cords of wood cut and paid for. We question if any other Town Forest in the State can make a better showing for the work done and the number of trees set out during a like period.

FRANK N. RAND. JAMES T. COLGAN. CHARLES R. FORD.

The majority of this board wish to add this to the above report. We feel sure that those who went ahead in cutting trees and bushes on the roadsides under the emergency appropriation for the unem- ployed did not consult the General Laws Chapter 87 relating to shade trees or they would have had our duly elected tree warden placed in charge of this work.

FRANK N. RAND. JAMES T. COLGAN.

Dec. 16. Box 52. 1.20 a. m. Automobile. Loss $200. Covered by insurance.

Dec. 31. Box 5. 11.55 p. m. False alarm.

The fire alarm extension to the lower end of Locust Street has been completed, two boxes being installed one near the residence of Daniel Sullivan, the other near residence of Archer Thomas.

This year we have purchased two boxes to re- place boxes 4 and 25. The old type of boxes when purchased were only guaranteed for 18 months and have now been in use nearly that many years and are not reliable. We recommend that at least 2 boxes a year be purchased until all the old boxes are replaced by standard boxes.

The solution and plates in the alarm batteries should be changed this year. The system having been installed in 1925 has been no expense to the Town other than the current used for charging.
