GENEALOGY OF MERRIMAC 1639-1939
Sept. 6, 1638. Petition presented to the General Court by Simon Bradstreet and others, leave was granted for a plantation at Merrimac, on the north side of the river.
May, 1639. Colchester settled, 60 grantees (land included what is now Salisbury, Amesbury, Merrimac, Mass., South Hampton, N. H., and part of Newton, Kingston, Plaistow, Hampstead and Seabrook, H. N.
Sept. 4, 1639. Town named Colchester by General Court.
Oct. 7, 1640. Name of Town changed to Salisbury by General Court.
Dec. 26, 1642. Thirty families ordered to move west of the Powow River.
1642. Main road Haverhill through Amesbury "marked out 1642", "laid out anew four rods wide 1685".
March 19, 1655. Amesbury organized as a Town (including what is now Merrimac. 18 inhabitants, with voting rights as Commoners, Anthony Colby. John Hoyt, Phillip Challis, George Martin, Jarrot Haddon, Richard Currier, John Bayly, William Hunting- ton, Valentine Rowell, Edward Cottle, Thomas Barnard, John Weed, Orlando Bagly, Henry Blasdell, Thomas Macy, William Sargent. William Barnes, John Colby.
1666. Town of New Salisbury incorporated by General Court.
June 15. 1666. First Town officers chosen. Prudential men (Select- men) Thomas Barnard, Philip Challis, Robert Jones, John Weed, John Hoyt, Sr. Town had 36 freemen or voters of whom at least eight with their families lived at what is now Merrimac.
January 25. 1667. Town named Amesbury. Original Town records reads "Amesbery").

1642 to 1726. West Amesbury generally called "Jamaco".
Probable first settlers of what is now Merrimac in order of their settlement were Edward Cottle, John Hoyt, John Weed, Samuel Foot, Thomas Sargent, Robert Jones, John Pressy, Thomas Nichols, James Frees, Joseph Lankester, Thomas Stevens, Josue Goldsmith, John Jimson, John Martin and Thomas Haynes.
1726. Amesbury divided into two parishes, East and West Ames- bury. The West Parish embracin~ West and South Amesbury, now Merrimac and Merrimacport in 1726, had 127 persons as- sessed for tax purposes, the population then being about 400 persons.
April 11, 1876. Merrimac set off from Amesbury as a separate Town by act of the General Court.

Annual Town Meeting
ESSEX, ss.
To James P. Donahue, one of the Constables of the Town of Merrimac,
Greeting:
In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the legal voters of the Town of Merrimac to meet in Sargent Hall in Merrimac on
Monday, March 6, 1939
at six o'clock in the forenoon to act on the following articles, namely :--
Article 1. To elect a Moderator for one year, Town Clerk for one year, three Selectmen for one year, three members of the Depart- ment of Public Welfare for one year, one Assessor for three years, Treasurer for one year, Collector of Taxes for one year, one member of the School Committee for three years, one Trustee of Cemeteries for three years, two Trustees of the Public Library for three years, one Trustee of Kimball Park for three years, five Commissioners of Playground for one year, one Commissioner of Municipal Light Board for three years, one Water Commissioner for three years, three Constables for one year, three Surveyors of Lumber and Measurers of Wood and Bark for one year, and a Tree Warden for

one year. In voting under this article the Polls may be closed not earlier than four o'clock P. M.
Article 2. To fix the Compensation of the Collector of Taxes.
Article 3. To determine what sum of money shall be raised to defray the necessary and usual charges and expenses of the Town for the year 1939 and make appropriation for the same.
Article 4. To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Town Treasurer with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year be- ginning January 1, 1940 and to issue a note or notes therefor, pay- able within one year, and to renew any note or notes as may be given for a period of less than one year in accordance with Section 17, Chapter 44, General Laws.
Article 5. To see if the Town will vote to appropriate the sum of one thousand dollars for the Maintenance of Road Machinery to keep road machinery in operation, said amount to be transferred from the Road Machinery account.
Article 6. To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Select- men to appoint a Co-Ordinator (for the term of one year) of W.P.A. or other Federal or State Relief projects, who may be a member of the Board of Selectmen and to fix the amount of compensation to be paid therefor, and to raise and appropriate a sufficient sum of money to pay for the same.
Article 7. To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of six thousand ($6,000.00) dollars to be expended under the supervision of the Selectmen for W.P.A. or other Federal or State Relief projects.
Article 8. To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate an additional sum of money to be expended under the direction of the Selectmen for W.P.A. or other Federal or State Relief projects, the sum thus appropriated to be borrowed on tax titles under Chapter 49, Acts of 1933 as amended.
