Arrangements have been made with Mr. Greene, agent at Thorn- dike, whereby residents there can leave cards at the office for such library books as they may desire, and the books will be drawn and returned for them, the same as is now done at Three Rivers. It is hoped that all who can will avail themselves of this privilege. Many of the schools in town are now using the historical and scientific books of the library as auxiliary studies, under the direction of their teachers, much to their advantage. Every effort in their power to enlarge the usefulness of the library in this direction will be put forth by the management.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
Your committee would respectfully report the condition of public schools and their progress for the past year, at the same time of- fering suggestions for the ensuing year.
The year has been a prosperous one; most of the schools have done good work, the interest has been well sustained, and the efforts of the teachers toward practical, every-day education been more marked.
Local epidemics have broken in upon the work of a few schools, causing a falling off in the average attendance, and of course retarding the progress of all connected with those schools ; others have been "handicapped" by too frequent change of teachers. We believe it the best policy to retain the services of a good teacher as long as possible, and just as good to weed out the inefficient.
While we would not make any invidious comparisons, nor detract in the least from praise due other schools, we think it but just to call your attention to the work done in our High school ; that work, done under such difficulties, is very gratifying to us, and we feel that with the same guidance under the new conditions, soon to obtain, all will be proud of school and building.
Your committee deem themselves fortunate in securing the services of a student from Wellesley as assistant, the increased number of pupils requiring increased help to continue thorough work.
The appropriation for transportation of pupils has been another factor in enlarging the usefulness of the school and heightening its
33
interest, bringing, as it does, pupils from the different schools to "cross blades " with new opponents. We confidently ask a renewal of the appropriation.
It was deemed best, owing to over-crowding of the lower grades, to establish another grade at Thorndike, and a competent teacher was placed in charge.
An improved system of drawing has been introduced, and Man- ikins have been placed in the higher schools for aid in the study of physiology. No changes have been made in the text books during the year.
Our schools have been visited by an agent of the State Board of Education, who thought our corps of teachers progressive, and that both schools and buildings were much improved since his last visit.
The shifting character of a large part of our population, and the placing of children in the manufacturing establishments of our villages, render it impossible to maintain the grade which is found where these drawbacks do not exist.
We would again urge upon the parents their duty toward the schools, assuring them that their visits would encourage both teacher and pupil, and materially aid in increasing their interest.
We most urgently recommend a special appropriation, or a larger one for repairs, for supplying the building at the Depot village with new steam-heating apparatus, as it has been impossible during the severe weather to heat some of the rooms sufficiently for either health or comfort.
The expenses have been kept within the appropriations and a balance left in the treasury, as will be seen by accompanying report.
The committee submits the following Financial Statement :
