SUPPRESSION OF ILLEGAL LIQUOR SALES.
This has been the most difficult problem with which we have had to deal, and while we have endeavored to be ener- getic and vigilant, we feel that we have not prevented the illegal sale of liquor in the town.
The officers have served ten search warrants in the town during the year, securing liquors in seven cases, which after the usual proceedings were declared forfeited to the Com- monwealth. Nine cases have been brought against six persons for various offences against the liquor law, and in every case the offender has been convicted. The result has been the payment of fines amounting to five hundred and fifty dollars, ($475 to the town and $75 to the county), and the permanent removal from town of two of the worst and most persistent offenders the town has ever had to deal with.

FERRILL CROSSING.
Up to the present time there has been expended the sum of $831 in the separation of grades at this point, and we are
27
of the opinion that it will be very unsatisfactory when com- pleted. We have been compelled to go to the courts for a rehearing on account of an error in the plans of the com- missioners, which has caused so much delay that the railroad were unable to finish the work in the fall as they had contemplated.
No appropriation.
Edwin P. Ball, survey and blue prints, $ 8.00 Henry K. Ferrill, land damages, $300.00
ELECTRIC LIGHTING.
There have been two new lights located, one at Three Rivers and one at the Opera House in the Depot Village, and the service on the whole has been satisfactory. We expect that there will be more or less complaint every year. We have expended the whole amount of the appropriation to secure the service the town has had during the year.

REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN
FOR THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 1, 1896.
The library has received a much larger accession of new books the past year than ever before in its history, as a result of the increase in the appropriation by the town. The figures are as follows :-
Number of volumes March 1, 1895, 3,910
Volumes purchased during the year,
307
Volumes donated during the year,
54
361
Present number of volumes,
4,271
There have been 12,273 volumes drawn during the year, of which 9385 were fiction and 2888 other classes. The call for books was somewhat sluggish in the early part of the library year, but the acquisition of the new volumes gave a decided impetus to the circula- tion. This will be seen from a comparison of the figures for the past four months with the corresponding months of the preceding year :
1894-95.
1895-6.
Volumes loaned in November,
935
1082
" December,
902
1006
" January,
1025
1427
66
" February,
1017
1540
On the 29th of last month there were 111 books drawn, this being the largest number ever taken in one day. These figures demon- strate in a very pleasant way the reading public's appreciation of

the new material now available for their use. In the selection of new works many have been chosen with special reference to the needs of the pupils in the public schools.
The record of the year is submitted to the voters with the hope that it will be so satisfactory that they will gladly appropriate for the use of the library the same amount as last year.
