ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the School Committee of Berkley :
I have the honor of presenting my second annual report as your Superintendent of Schools.
The outstanding event of the year is the actual start on a four room building on the site of the old Berkley Common School, with the resulting certainty that this is the last year of present conditions. The children of Berkley will have school facilities that compare favorably with those of other places. After a year or two of the new conditions, when it has been demonstrated that good schools do not involve prohibitive expense and that they do involve a real return value for the money spent, I am sure that hardly a person in town would consider for a moment a return to old conditions.
This year the work of equipping the present schools has been done with future conditions in mind. The object has been to have, so far as possible, in the present schools, an equipment that, would be, when brought together, ade- quate and suitable for the new building without needless duplication of those items that go according to teachers or grades rather than according to the number of pupils in- volved.
While the new building meets present needs, I wish to point out that it would not care for more than a limited increase in school population. The Town should consider carefully the probability of an increased school population

in any locality, before the building now serving that area is sold. Schools closed at a time of consolidation some- times become needed again, and their sale proves to be a costly mistake. While some of the present buildings are unlikely to be required again, the school at Burt's Corner, is, in my opinion, one that will probably needed at some future time as a primary school, and a similar need could easily develop in the No. 6 district.
I wish to close this report with an expression of my appre- ciation of the pleasant relations that I have enjoyed with all citizens and officials of the town, and to express also the satisfaction with which I anticipate the near future time when conditions will allow a Superintendent of Schools to make such use of the portion of his time belonging to the town as efficient service requires.
Respectfully submitted, EDWARD L. HILL,
Supt. of Schools

ANNUAL HEALTH REPORT
To the School Committee.
The school nurse, Miss Alice B. MacIntosh has done ex- cellent work during the year 1925 working hard at school houses and in the homes that visible results might be accomplished. She made 103 school visits and 129 visits to the homes of the scholars urging the parents to look more carefully to the nourishment of the children to overcome the condition of underweight and all the ills, lack of am- bition, energy and strength attending it. In April the weighing showed 20 children, and in September 21 children were 103/8 or more underweight.
Besides the underweights the following reasons called her to the homes,- to give instruction to parents of 20 children in the method of cleaning heads of lice; 10 visits to children staying home for severe colds; 5 each for eye troubles, chicken pox, tonsillitis; 3 for swollen glands; 2 each for appendicitis, skin eruptions, ear trouble; 1 each for acute nephritis, pneumonia, boils, dog-bite,
During the months of February, March, April and May a dental clinic was conducted by Dr. Charles A. Teeden of Taunton as dentist. During these months 95 children were treated, 91 had their teeth cleaned, 86 teeth were ex- tracted and 29 cavities had silver fillings.
In June a pre-school clinic for the examination of child- ren intending to enter the schools in September. At this clinic held in the Library building 21 children were ex- amined with the following findings, 13 with carious teeth, 5 with enlarged tonsils, 4 with adenoids, 7 with enlarged

cervical glands, 1 with heart disease, 1 to have X-ray examination, 1 to be under observation for a year for tuberculosis.
During the year Miss MacIntosh was instrumental in having 3 children fitted with eye glasses, and eight opera- tions for the removal of tonsils and adenoids. An emer- gency case was bought at Burt's Corner with money raised by the pupils and a sum of money for health fund was raised by pupils of Assonet Neck by giving a Health Play.
