REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE, BERKLEY

To the citizens of Berkley :

During the year 1936 your school board's chief concern has been the problem of providing more satisfactory housing conditions for the pupils of the first and second grades who meet in the town hall. A building committee comprising the school committee, superintendent of schools, and select- men has made repeated contacts with the Fall River officer of the W.P.A. and the State Department of Education in an attempt to have approved a project calling for a two- room addition to the Berkley School, which has been turned down because of a lack of funds at the Fall River office.

William J. O'Keefe, Supervisor of Statistics and Research of the State Department of Education, met with your com- mittee in October and investigated the housing conditions in Berkley. As a temporary measure, Mr. O'Keefe sug- gested the use of the library basement. At a special town meeting your committee was refused the privilege of using the library basement for school purposes. There are no prospects of receiving aid through the W.P.A. Here is a problem that must be met in the near future. Your com- mittee fully realizes the town's financial condition; if, how- ever, we are alert to provide the best in education for our boys and girls it would seem that the only satisfactory solu- tion to the problem is an addition to the Berkley School.

In April, Norman D. Bailey was reelected to the super- intendency of the district for a three-year term by a unanim- ous vote of the Joint Board.

At a joint board meeting of the Dighton-Freetown- Berkley Union held in July it was voted to annex the town
