CLASS ODE

As a statue which a sculptor

Fashions from the plastic clay,

Ever towards perfection growth By the moulding of each day ; Nobler, better grow we also, More upright, more straight, and true

As proceeding towards the morrow Our today with care we view.

As a banner drapes a statue,

So our lines we decorate,

For the white and blue go with us

Teaching us to emulate.

Blue the sign of faithful courage,

White the sign of purity,

Signs of honor true, all our age,

Go with us from sea to sea.

Let us pledge our Chelmsford High School,

Pledge her honor pure and bright !

Let us follow all her teachings

With the aim to do the right.

Up hard labor's stony pathway

Let us go, nor stop to rest

Till we've reached the sunlit summit

Where we all may gain our quest.

REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF DRAWING

Chelmsford, Mass., January 5, 1924

Mr. Charles H. Walker,

Superintendent of Schools,

Chelmsford, Mass.

Dear Sir :

The course in drawing for the year in the Chelmsford Schools has been planned to develop drawing as means of expression. This includes problems in design, color and illustration, which are connected with every-day art.

The work in the primary grades has covered paper cutting, simple problems in design and illustration.

The upper grades have had problems in design and color. They have become quite proficient in designing within a square, rectangle and circle.

The High School course is made up of both free hand and mechanical drawing. If more time were allowed the pupils, much more could be accomplished.

A course in Picture Study is introduced this year. This course includes not only the consideration of reproductions of paintings, but of architecture, sculpture and crafts.

I wish to express to you and to the members of the school committee my gratitude for your kindness.

Respectfully submitted, RUTH L. HAZELWOOD, Drawing Supervisor.

REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF MUSIC

Chelmsford Mass., Jan. 11, 1924

Mr. Charles H. Walker,

Superintendent of Schools,

Chelmsford, Mass.

Dear Sir :

"Service to humanity should be our highest aim in education and nothing tends more practically toward this end than a musical atmosphere in the school, the community and the nation."

In grade one much time has been given to rote songs, leaving notation and sight reading until later in the year.

There are at the present time at the High School thirty-two members in the Boys' Glee Club and sixty in the Girls' Glee Club. The combined clubs are now planning an Operetta, to be given in the near future.

The instrumentation of the Orchestra is five violins, one 'cello, one clarinet, two cornets, piano and drums.

I wish to thank all teachers for their hearty co-operation.

Respectfully yours, ELSIE S. BURNE, Supervisor of Music.

REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN

Mr. C. H. Walker,

Superintendent of Schools,

Chelmsford, Mass.

Dear Sir :

A great deal of time has been spent in school work this year, 1923. An honest effort has been made that the parents may know the physical condition of their children, and the means that can be employed to improve their health. Whenever possible advice has been given to pupils themselves. The very efficient help of the nurse has accomplished much in following up those cases found defective. More co-operation of parents with the school physician, and the nurse is desired.

Very truly yours, FRED E. VARNEY, School Physician.

.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

Chelmsford, Mass., Dec. 27, 1923

Mr. Charles Walker, Superintendent of Schools, Chelmsford, Mass. Dear Sir : I hereby submit the following report for the year ending December 31, 1923.

20

Drs. Varney and Scoboria conducted the physical examinations in the Chelmsford schools and a record is kept, on a physical record card, of each student's defect.

We should appreciate the presence of each parent at these examinations.

Students from the grades have been treated at St. John's Hospital for defective eyes, ears and throat.

In May we conducted a successful clinic for students suspected of tuberculosis or undernourished. This examination resulted in fourteen students being X-Rayed at North Reading and Tewksbury.

I should like to bring to the attention of the community the need of a dental clinic.

Dr. Raymond of the Abbott Hospital, Westford, has been doing this work for us, but it would facilitate matters if we had dental equipment for the Chelmsford schools.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the co-operation accorded me by the School Committee, the Superintendent, the teaching force and the Parent-Teachers' Association.

Respectfully submitted, MARY E. SHEEHAN, R. N.

REPORT OF ATTENDANCE OFFICERS

FROM MAY 1ST TO DECEMBER 31, 1923

Mr. C. H. Walker,

Supt. of Schools.

Dear Sir :

Twenty cases of truancy were reported to me in that period. I had very good success in getting them back to school with the exception of one pupil. In this case the parents believed the child was attending school, whereas she was absent for about two weeks; finally they took her out of school. In one school that I was called to, there were about eight scholars absent a great deal of the time. I had the teacher call them all out in the corridor and after giving them a good talking to, I had no more bother with them, since the teacher reported one hundred per cent. in attendance from then until the term ended in June. I had three pupils where the teacher reported them always tardy; after one visit to the homes, I had no more trouble. I found three children in the Town of school age who had not attended school for six months or more. One of these was not allowed to go on account of some skin disease. In the month of November, three children were found who could not go to school for the want of proper clothing. I reported the case to the School Board and Selectmen, and was instructed to get them clothing which I did, and sent them back to school. There is one case still pending, where it looks very much as though the pupil would have to be sent somewhere else.

Respectfully yours,

CHAS. L. PETRIE.

21

Mr. C. H. Walker, Supt. of Schools. Dear Sir :

Cases of truancy investigated, 14; all were promptly returned to school. One taken from store and placed in school.

Respectfully submitted, EDWARD FALLON.

The figures in bold-faced type show the number of pupils of normal age for the grade; those at right of bold-faced type show the number above normal age or "over-age"; those at left show the number below normal age or "under-age." With a well-adapted course of study and not too arbitrary system of marking, a school system in general should show about the same percentage of "over-age" and "under- age" pupils.
