Washburn Unit faculty and pupils are most fortunate this school year in having the services of Miss Leah M. Boutin as a special reading instructor. This addition to our staff makes even more effective our very important reading program. Pupils are very carefully evaluated as to their individual reading needs and are then placed in groups that have like needs; greatly increasing the effectiveness of reading teaching techniques.

The building has been brick-faced, and new doors have been in- stalled, including a garage door, in anticipation of its eventual use as an Industrial Arts Shop for Memorial High School.

I would like to thank all faculty members, supervisors, fellow principals and the Superintendent of Schools for their cooperation in helping me to make an effective school program for the pupils in the Washburn Unit School.

I herewith submit my annual report of the Union Street School for the year 1956.

It was unnecessary to do any further painting, as the various rooms had recently been redecorated. Both rooms on the lower floor have been in use until September, when one room was discontinued as a regular classroom and was converted into a smaller room. This is used once a week by Mrs. Helen Lamb with smaller groups in connection with her instruction in speech correction. Middleboro is indeed for- tunate to have the services of Mrs. Lamb, who is an experienced speech therapist, and much progress has been evidenced by her in- struction.

In June Mrs. Jean Ford, first grade teacher, retired from the Middleboro School system, to take a position in Hampton, New Hamp- shire.

The fall session opened with four first grades and five second grades - an enrollment of 225 pupils. Mrs. Betsy Burkhead was en- gaged as a temporary teacher, substituting for Miss Eleanor Thomas, who was recuperating from an operation. On October 14, 1956, we were saddened to learn of the sudden death of Miss Thomas. A graduate of Bridgewater Normal School, Miss Thomas had taught in the Middle- boro schools from 1929 to 1956. Her friendly personality and sound philosophy will be missed by her many friends at Union Street School.

Mrs. Valdis Talbot of Bridgewater was engaged as a permanent teacher as a replacement in grade two. Mrs. Talbot graduated from Plainfield, New Jersey, high school and from Mt. Holyoke College, with a B.A. degree in 1933. Although Mrs. Talbot had no previous teaching experience, she is adapting herself to the classroom and making excellent progress.

Miss Jackson, our school nurse, has always contributed to the health and well-being of the children, and I feel that due to her effici- ency and thoroughness, contagious diseases have been kept at a low ebb, and no serious epidemics have interrupted regular attendance.

Dr. Louis Fuller, assisted by Mrs. Mary Edgerly, health nurse, conducted the dental clinic on Wednesdays, and pupils were trans- ported from other schools for treatment.

ANNUAL REPORT

Much credit for the excellent condition of the building, as to cleanliness and sanitation, is due to the tireless efforts of our custodian, Mr. Raymond Chapman.

Our Parent-Teacher Association held several meetings, general and executive, during the year. This cooperaton of the parents has been greatly appreciated.

The Rock-South Middleboro district is one area without immedi- ate supervision of a principal and it is therefore the duty of the Super- intendent to supervise this area.

The Rock School, a two-room building, was thoroughly cleaned during the summer and has had new outside cement stoops installed in the older portion of the building. In addition, a new oil penetration seal coat driveway has also been installed. Other than minor repairs, no additional work has been done to this building.

Effective September 1, 1956, Mrs. Catherine E. Kaladin, a gradu- ate of Regis College with a bachelor's degree and North Eastern Uni- versity with a master's degree, was appointed to the position made vacant by Mrs. Mary E. Hoeffer. Mrs. Kaladin comes to the Middleboro school system after teaching grade two for 3 years in the Boston public schools.

The instruction offered in the building parallels the work being done in the central schools in every detail. The teachers meet with and consult with those teachers in town at all times, so as to keep a close coordination of instruction.

At the South Middleboro School, which is composed of grades 3 and 4, our teaching personnel remains as it has been for the past three years. Again, a very close coordination is maintained to keep the work on the same level as is found in the schools in the center of town.

The South Middleboro school was thoroughly cleaned, outside gut- ters have been installed, and a new oil tank replaces the old one. Both buildings are in excellent condition, and contribute to an excellent educational environment.

The greatest change educationally has taken place in the North Middleboro district this past year. For the first time in the history of the town, single grades are housed in individual rooms. This type of organization has made it possible to increase the number of pupils per room, and has also given pupils the opportunity for more direct educational instruction in meeting individual needs.

At the Plymouth Street School the building was thoroughly cleaned, and an outside rubbish depository was constructed. Other than minor repairs, no major work was undertaken.

The Pleasant Street School, which houses grade 2 this year, has a new teacher. Mrs. Margaret J. Walsh, a teacher with 5 years of experience in the Quincy public schools, was appointed to teach in this building. New coat racks were installed in the entry-ways and the building was thoroughly cleaned.

Grades 3 and 4 have been assigned to the Pratt Free School. Mrs. Virginia Smith was transferred from the Pleasant Street School to teach grade 3, and to replace Mrs. Myra Shaw, who was transferred to the Middleborough Junior High School. The repairs and main- tenance of this building are maintained jointly by the Trustees of the Pratt Free- School and the Middleboro public schools. In this instance, materials for new flooring in the toilets and materials necessary to create a. Remedial Room-Library were purchased by the Trustees and installed by our maintenance department. In addition, the Trustees have had the entire building painted. This building is one of our most attractive two-room schools, and has been most conducive to good education.
