Librarian's Report
In submitting the Library Report of 1932, my thoughts revert to the great community loss and a deep personal one in the sudden death of Miss Edith L. Fletcher, who through her pleas- ant personality and varied services is lovingly remembered. In her capacity of Librarian she cheerfully gave countless hours in carrying on the work of library service. I am sure all who come to the library still miss her and her willingness to help.
During the long years of service that Miss Fletcher had given the library, the Division of Public Libraries did not find it necessary to visit this library and they very kindly offered to assist the new Librarian with her duties and problems. In- as much as the library had not been inspected for some time, Miss E. Louise Jones and two assistants thoroughly examined the whole book collection. Books were put aside for binding. Other books which could be mended, about 250, were taken by the Division and repaired by an expert mender at no expense to the library. The books were rearranged on the shelves, al- lowing space on each shelf for growth. Shelf labels were made to help readers in locating books.
Middleton was very fortunate in having Mr. and Mrs. Cronan of the Boston Public Library for two story hours. This was made possible through the Division of Public Libraries
71

and financed by the Massachusetts Library Aid Association. The pupils from the fourth grade through the eighth grade were included in these groups. These story hours are helpful in stimulating the habit and desire for good books.
