ENGINEER'S REPORT.
To the Selectmen of Quincy: -
GENTLEMEN, -I most respectfully submit the following report : -
The department is under the control of a Chief and five As- sistant Engineers.
There are four hand engines with hose carriages, one four- wheeled hose carriage and one hook and ladder carriage, all in the best order and condition, and manned by volunteers. The companies are full, with the exception of Vulture No. 4, which has no company attached. There has been attached to the fire department the past year a steam force-pump, which is of great service to the town in filling reservoirs, and in case of fire in the central part of the town it would be of very great service.
The engine houses of the several companies are all in the best of repair and condition, and I know of no repairs needed on any of them the ensuing year.
There are belonging to the department about 2,800 feet of good hose, that can be relied upon, and about 600 feet that cannot be relied upon, but may do to pass water through in filling reservoirs.
The reservoirs are all in good condition, and there have been three new ones built the past year, - one at the junction of Adams and Hancock streets, one on Washington street, and one on Willard street, West District. It is the opinion of our board that a reservoir is very much needed on Edwards' Hill, near J. D. Whicher & Co's. shop, as there is no chance to get water anywhere in that part of the town.
All of which I most respectfully submit to your honorable board, together with a schedule of town property in charge of each company.
WASHINGTON M. FRENCH,
Chief Engineer.

MOUNT WOLLASTON CEMETERY.
The Board of Managers of the Mount Wollaston Cemetery, in accordance with the By-Laws, respectfully submit their First Annual Report.
RECORD OF LOTS.
By the record of lots, it appears that the entire number, as laid out in the plan, is nine hundred and fifteen (915), of which eight hundred and twenty-three (823) have been sold. Of the number remaining unsold, some twenty to twenty-five are only suitable for tombs, leaving only about seventy (70) lots that are satisfactory to purchasers, or suitable for burials. This state- ment shows the actual necessity for some immediate action by the town, for an enlargement of the Cemetery.
SALE OF LOTS.
There have been sold during the past year (only to residents of this town) forty-five (45) lots, at the price established by vote of the town, viz., ten (10) dollars per lot, yielding the sum of four hundred and fifty (450) dollars.
GRADING AND CARE OF LOTS.
The number of lots "graded " during the past year is fifty- seven (57), for which has been charged the sum of seven hun- dred thirty four and 5% (734.50) dollars, and the number of lots that have been under the care of the Superintendent, in addition to the above, is eighty (80), for which has been charged the sum of three hundred one and -85% (301.85) dollars, making the total amount for labor in grading and care of lots, ten hundred thirty-six and 85% (1,036.35) dollars, of which sum one hundred and eight (108) dollars remains unpaid by the owners of the lots.
5 Q
66
REPORT ON THE SUBJECT OF SOME METHOD FOR CARE OF THE CEMETERY OTHER THAN BY TOWN APPROPRIATION.
At the last annual March meeting a vote was passed directing the Board of Managers to report some plan " by which the cem- etery shall be self-sustaining." This subject has been duly considered, and your Board are unable to determine on any practicable method for accomplishing that purpose. They, how- ever, suggest that it is not quite fair that the whole expense for the care and improvement of the avenues, paths, and public lots should be borne wholly by the annual appropriation of the town, to the exclusion of non-resident owners, who, no doubt, would be glad to share the expense, and your Board therefore propose to ask authority from the town to levy an assessment on said non-resident owners, which it is thought they will cheerfully pay; at the same time proposing the usual annual appropriation of one thousand (1,000) dollars by the town.
THE OLD CEMETERY.
By a vote of the town, the appropriation of two hundred (200) dollars for the "old cemetery " was to be expended by the board of managers of the Mt. Wollaston Cemetery. A part of the appropriation has been expended on the avenues and paths and trees, and in the general care of the grounds. A row of Norway pines has been set out on the northerly side, and a few maples in other parts of the cemetery. More trees will be needed to take the place of those that decay. Some other improvements can be made to advantage, and an appro- priation of one hundred (100) dollars is asked for, for the ensuing year.
