REPORT

OF THE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

OF THE

TOWN OF QUINCY,

FOR THE

SCHOOL YEAR 1879-80.

School Committee.

JOHN Q. ADAMS, JAMES H. SLADE, CHARLES F. ADAMS, JR.,

GEORGE L. MILLER, JASON G. WITHAM, EDWIN W. MARSH.

Superintendent. FRANCIS W. PARKER.

BOSTON: COCHRANE & SAMPSON, PRINTERS, 9 BROMFIELD STREET.

(12 Q)

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The School Committee offer the following report : - .

The town at its last annual meeting voted to enlarge and re- model the Adams School House upon plans to be approved by the School Committee, at an expense not exceeding eight thous- and dollars. The Committee accordingly obtained satisfactory plans and during the summer vacation carried them into effect, at a total cost of $7,952.93. . The house is now as commodious and convenient as any in town, and seems to be sufficient for the wants of that part of the town for many years to come. The transaction is believed to have been economical and advan- tageous to the town in every way. A special appropriation of one thousand dollars was also made for necessary alterations and repairs at the High School and to supply additional desks therein. These alterations were made also during the summer vacation, and that house is now fairly arranged for the comfort- able accommodation of its large classes.

Besides these two items of extraordinary outlay, the town au- thorized the Committee to expend thirty-four thousand dollars, if so much should be found needful, for repairs and the ordinary expenses of the schools.

This sum was divided among the several usual heads of school expenditure as follows : There was allowed for -

Teachers' salaries, fuel, and care of

rooms,

$26,480 00

Incidental expenses and transporta- tion,

3,200 00

Books and stationery,

300 00

Repairs of buildings,

2,020 00

Superintendent's salary,

2,000 00

Amount carried forward,

$34,000 00

(171)

I72

Amount brought forward, $ 34,0000 00

Besides these appropriations, the Com-

mittee received for School expendi-

tures from the State Fund,

$168 77

From the Coddington Fund, 75 00

243 77

Thus making up a total sum at their disposal

for general purposes of

$34,243 77

The Committee has expended during the year,

For teachers' salaries and truant officers, $23,291 99

Fuel, 1,124 80

Care of rooms,

· 1,661 76

Incidental outlay,

2,395 83

Transportation,

689 00

Books and stationery, 314 32

Repairs, 2,320 67

Superintendent's salary, 2,000 00

Being a total amount for these items of $33,798 37

The Committee would call special attention to the charge of three hundred dollars for books and stationery. This is a com- paratively new charge upon the common purse, but it has always been a larger expense to individuals. By furnishing sta- tionery and books upon the plan now in operation a real econ- omy of more than one hundred per cent. is effected. When parents were yearly called upon for perpetual new readers and copy-books, the constant dribble was not only a great annoy- ance, but a serious tax.
