ASSESSORS' REPORT.
The highest tax is paid by the town of Granville, Hampden County - $27 on $1,000, followed by 22 other towns paying a tax rate of $20 and upwards. The lowest rate is paid by Gos- nold, Dukes County - $4.44, and there are 21 other towns paying a tax rate of less than $10 on $1,000. Of the cities, the lowest tax rate is in Boston and Springfield - $12.80; highest, Brockton - $19.70
Gay Head is the poorest town in the state, with its assessed valuation of $18,000. Brookline is the richest, with over $40,000,000, while Boston is the richest city, with nearly $800,000,000.
The total assessed valuation of the state increased $90,000,000 over that of one year previous. Thirty cities and 224 towns in- creased in valuation, while 98 towns decreased.
The amount of personal property assessed in the state, $589,000,000 ; real estate, $1,840,000,000 ; value of buildings, $921,100,000 ; land, $918,500,000 ; number of persons assessed on property, 406,000 ; poll tax only, 475,500 ; whole number of polls assessed, 675,200.
The average tax rate of towns and cities in the Common- wealth for the year 1893, is $15.06.
In accordance with the requirements of the Town By-laws, the Assessors hereby recommend that the sum of $425 be ap- propriated to meet the estimated expenses of their department for the year 1894.
