Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10
"If the Swampscott High School is to offer an adequate practi- cal arts curriculum to that third of all the boys in the school who have chosen it, there must be sufficient room in which to house the necessary equipment.
"The girls should have a complete course in household arts, including cooking, sewing, household organization and manage- ment.
"Compulsory education is bringing into the High School practi- cally all the boys and girls in the community who are of high school age. They vary in ability, needs and desires, and it be- comes the duty of the school to provide for each that type of educa- tion from which he can profit most. Equality of educational op- portunity for them demands it. Without the adaptation of curri- cula to meet the needs of these pupils individually, there is for them no democracy in education.
"This is a real problem in the Swampscott High School, and immediate steps should be taken toward its solution."
It is very easy when on the subject of desirable additions to our system so to multiply the needs that many of them become overlooked and neglected. It does not seem, then, desirable to anticipate too much for the future. It can, however, be said that our system could well have an extension of its physical training program, were there additional facilities available for Junior High and Elementary pupils. A broader offering of vocational exper- ience would also be most desirable for the pupils of Junior High School age, and we have previously stated that our pupils of the fifth and sixth grades could profit from elementary courses in Household Arts and Science and Woodworking.
When the major building operations of the town are under way, it would seem desirable for the community to consider some simple adornment of the grounds of the different school buildings. Several attempts to secure funds for this purpose have been made in the past, but have been frowned upon by the Finance Com- mittees who have reviewed them.
In closing this report may I commend to the Committee the work of our principals, supervisors and teachers. The spirit with which they have labored for the good of the Swampscott schools during the past year has been truly splendid, and to them and their efforts are due the progress and achievement attained in 1927.
Respectfully submitted,
HAROLD F. DOW, Superintendent of Schools.
