It is gratifying to note a gain in circulation of nearly 3,000 over the record of last year and it would add to our satisfaction to report a decrease in the per cent of fiction, but we have to re- member that adult and juvenile are included together and that standard fiction is borrowed by the schools for study.
WORK WITH THE SCHOOLS.
The teachers have taken 1,024 volumes on their special cards in addition to the 4,458 supplied to the schools for school work and for circulation among the pupils. The teachers have ex- pressed appreciation of the help which this privilege has brought to them and to their pupils, and testimonials, through neatly writ- ten letters, from the children themselves, have come to the libra- rian from time to time.
STUDENT'S CARDS.
Borrowers desiring books for special study are entitled to a Student's Card, on which ten books may be taken, subject to one renewal without request. 854 volumes have been issued in this way during the year.
REGISTRATION OF BORROWERS.
The applications since the last registration number 6,131, of which 301 were received this year, and 48 Student's Cards have been in use. Special Cards, not for fiction, are given to all bor- rowers over twelve years of age.
EXAMINATION OF BOOKS.
The customary annual inventory showed 23 books to be missing. 3 lost books were paid for by the borrowers, and 1 book was burned on account of contagion. 6 of the books reported miss- ing last year have been found. 255 worn books have been dis- carded.
ACCESSIONS.
764 volumes have been added to the library, including 88 dona- tions, 81 replacements, and 101 periodicals bound. 338 books have been re-bound
The Trustees welcome suggestions for purchase, and are glad to comply with requests when possible. A number of books rec- ommended during the year have been added to the library.
See Appendix A for a list of some of the more important books added during the year 1908, including those purchased from the Susannah Hunt Stetson Fund, also a list of the books purchased from the Augustus J. Richards Fund.

READING AND REFERENCE ROOM.
Statistics of the use made of the books of reference cannot be furnished, for, in this department, free access to the books for use in the room is granted to all visitors. Not only have the works of reference been extensively consulted but 574 volumes have been borrowed from the circulating department for use in the reading rooms by people in search of information on a wide variety of subjects.
While it is a satisfaction that so many have come to appreciate the value of this department, it would be a greater satisfaction if many more could share the advantages which it offers, for a ref- erence library puts within reach of all, books otherwise limited to a few.
The Americana, a universal reference library, 16v. ; Boston directory for the year commencing July 1, 1907 ; Hazell's annual, 1908; McFadden and Davis' Selected list of plays ; Poole's In- dex to periodical literature, v.6, 1902-1906 ; Statesman's year book, 1908; U. S. Census, Heads of families at the first census of the United States, taken in the year 1790, 12v. ; Who's who, 1908; Who's who in America, 1908-1909 ; have been placed in the reference room. The Reader's guide to periodical literature has been substituted for the Annual library index, discontinued. The periodicals are practically the same as last year.
The librarians are always pleased to lend their aid in any way possible, in reference work and in the selection of books, and a more general use of the reference room is invited.
See Appendix B for list of periodicals.
ART EXHIBITIONS.
During the year the library has received from the Library Art Club 17 groups of pictures comprising the following subjects :- Jamaica, Canterbury, Scotland (2), Mexico, Greece (3), Venice (4), Famous pictures (2), English lakes, Madonnas, Babies in Art, Florence (2), Pompeii, English Photogravures, South Ken- sington, Florence (4), Concord, Whistler's works.
The subjects have been well illustrated and the pictures have been a source of enjoyment and profit to those viewing them, calling forth expressions of appreciation from students of art, to whom they especially appealed, and attracting visitors from other towns to our library.
238
GIFTS.
In addition to the books and pamphlets from different sources, annual reports, bulletins, and other publications have come from 46 libraries, and Public Documents have been regularly received.
A brooch, the gift of Mrs. Emily A. Fifield, received in 1907, was not mentioned in the report of that year. This brooch is of interest on account of its connection with the family of the found- ers of the library.
A globe presented by Miss Sarah M. Loud adds to the effi- ciency of the reference room, and an unusually beautiful fern, the gift of Mrs. Orrin B. Bates, brightens the delivery room.
Two pictures have been presented to the library, one, a por- trait of the late Hon. E. Atherton Hunt, for many years a valued member of the Board of Trustees, was given by his children, and the other, a water color painting of Miss Caroline Augusta Blanchard, our first librarian, is the gift of citizens through the interested effort of Rev. F. B. Cressey. Visitors to the library miss her genial presence and valued help, but the portrait, pre- sented by patrons of the library and placed in the delivery room, still sheds the benediction of her smile upon those who learned to depend upon her cordial welcome and willing help.
The trustees take this occasion to acknowledge these gifts and to thank the donors, a list of whom may be found in Appendix C.
We regret that we cannot report the recovery of Miss Blanch- ard, who for more than twenty-seven years rendered to the people faithful and efficient service as Librarian, failing health compelling her to leave the work two years ago. We were fortunate, at the time of Miss Blanchard's illness, to secure the services of Miss Abbie L. Loud as Acting Librarian, and at the annual meeting of this year Miss Loud was appointed Librarian.
The much needed work of restoring the wood finish of the in- terior of the library has been done and the improvement is mani- fest.
CLARENCE P. WHITTLE,
By order and in behalf of the Trustees.
