VIOLET A. TWINING, Burlington, Mass. Union School.

January 1, 1915.

To the School Committee of Burlington, Massachusetts:

At the beginning of the school year pupils to the number of 116 were examined and the following noted :

There were ten without a positive vaccination scar, three of whom were in the first grade; two were reported for

61

adenoids, and six were reported for enlarged tonsils with adenoids.

There were a very large number of children whose teeth were in poor condition and there were thirty-seven who had at least three badly decayed teeth. In addition, there were a number of these who had considerable deformity of the jaws resulting from irregularity of the teeth.

I consider that the condition of the teeth of the children is fully as bad as in any previous year in which I have examined the children. There was no evidence of any con- tagious diseases in the school.

Very truly yours, C. GUY LANE.

The Travelling Libraries are much appreciated, especially by the younger readers. The first of the year the trustees secured a new Cyclopedia, with dictionary and atlas. This makes our reference shelves very well equipped for work. The Free Public Library Commission very kindy offer any assistance we need in keeping the library supplied with ma- terial the school might call for. Quite a number of our regular readers have shown their interest during the year by presenting books for the shelves, and magazines for the table. During the year we have added about forty new borrowers to our

68

card list, many of the number being summer people. Total list of cards issued numbers two hundred and twenty-five.

Respectfully submitted,

ELLA I. GETCHELL, Librarian.

Report of the Highway Surveyor

To the Citizens of Burlington :-

The Highway Surveyor makes the following report.

The general work of the Highway Department has not varied from the previous year. With the appropriation that the Town makes for highways and bridges it is not possible to enter into any extended work. Necessary repairs to keep the streets safe and passable is all that can reasonably be expected.

There are many places that are dangerous at the present time and should have guard rails placed. Accidents may readily occur from this neglect and the Town suffer by having damage suits on its hands.

There will be a small deficit in the Highway account at the close of the year. This was caused by a bridge which, owing to the automobile travel, gave out after the highway work ceased and the general appropriation expended.

Mrs. John Cummings has presented the Town with numerous loads of material for the roads and is entitled to our thanks for the same.

Respectfully submitted,

GEORGE W. BUSTEAD, Highway Surveyor.
