TREE WARDEN'S REPORT.

Last year no appropriation was made by the town for the care of our shade trees. The beetle made its appearance as usual. It was found necessary for the good of the trees, as well as the town, to do what we could in a limited way to pro- tect as far as possible our beautiful elms, and from June 23 to Aug. 14 a gang of men was kept at work spraying whenever the weather permitted, and with good results. The cost of spraying alone was $425.72, and for other work on trees $175.00, niaking a total of $600.72, all of which was taken from the street department, the most of it contributed by the Superintendent of Streets, Mr. Henry H. Rogers, for which the people of Fairhaven most certainly feel very grateful.

No appropriation has been made by the town for the past three years, and whoever the town elects as Tree Warden ought to have an appropriation to work with. The trees ought to be cared for ; they are too valuable to be destroyed by the beetle, and above all, by the careless man that don't care and has no regard for his neighbor's home.

I desire here to publicly thank those who were interested in the welfare of our trees who have reported to me owners of horses who have been careless enough to allow them to do damage to the same, and would recommend to the town an appropriation of not less than $500:00.

JOHN I. BRYANT,

Tree Warden.

SELECTMEN'S REPORT.

To the Citizens of Fairhaven :

The selectmen offer the following report and refer the citi- zens to the special reports for details of the various depart- ments.

A study of the street department report will convey to those interested an idea of the many improvements in our streets, and we would call special attention to the valuable work that has been done during the past year on Bridge street, and other streets in its vicinity.

In the matter of the New Bedford and Fairhaven bridge : Judgment has been entered against the town of Fairhaven in the gross sum of $42,889.35 in favor of the county of Bristol, the debt created and arising under the provisions of the Act of 1893, chapter 368, and the amendments thereto, and the Act of 1900, chapter 439, said amount being due Jan. 1, 1907.

And also judgment has been entered against the town in fa- vor of the city of New Bedford in the sum of $8,169.41, the debt created and arising under the provisions of the Act of 1900, chapter 439, due December 3, 1906, making a total cost for construction of the bridge to the town of Fairhaven of $51,058.76.

In payment of the sum due the city of New Bedford notes have been issued to the amount of $8,000.00. The balance, $169.41, has been paid from the incidental account, and the in- terest, $49.02, has been paid from the debt and interest account.

For amount due to the county of Bristol bonds to the amount of $42,000.00 will be issued, leaving $889.35, with the accrued interest, to be taken from the debt and interest account.

In estimating the requirements of the debt and interest ac- count for the coming year, we have been guided by the follow- ing figures :

58

Pease district sewer note, due Nov. 12, 1907, $1,000.00 Bridge street sewer note, due Nov. 11, 1907, 850.00

In view of the above figures, the selectmen would suggest that an appropriation of $8,800 be made for debt and interest.
