NORTH MAIN STREET

Was widened from the cemetery north, about 900 feet, and graded and sidewalk made on the west side.

Many of the sidewalks were repaired and stone screenings put on them.

The taking up of ashes and rubbish the past year has been successfully carried on, and the town very much benefited by the same. Some of our streets, accepted below grade, have been filled in without any additional cost to the town by the ashes taken in this way. The estimated cost for the past year was about $1,200.00.

For clearing snow the past year the cost has been over $700.00.

51

TREE WARDEN'S REPORT.

No appropriation has been made for several years for the care of our shade trees.

The beetle made its appearance as usual, but in larger num- bers than ever before, and on July 6th five men were put to work spraying the trees with arsenic of lead, and on August 7th the trunks of the trees were sprayed with insect emulsion. Then came the Tussock moth, which is a native insect and which comes more or less every year, and the past year was the worst known in many years. All kinds of trees, houses, fences and walls, were covered with them.

This insect is easily controlled by spraying with arsenic of lead, and the 'eggs destroyed by the use of crude creosote oil, which was used on all the trees found infested. Let us hope for the best, and that during the present year we will not be troubled by many of them.

The cost of spraying, repairs, supplies, and rent of building, was about $700.00 ; setting out and moving trees, cutting down dead ones, and removing dead branches and trimming where necessary. cost $200.00, making a total of $900.00. The most of this was contributed by the Superintendent of Streets, Mr. H. H. Rogers, for which the people of Fairhaven most certainly feel grateful.

No appropriation has been made by the town for the past four years, and whoever the town elects as Tree Warden ought to have some money to work with.

The trees ought to be cared for; they are valuable, and ought to be protected, and every good citizen should be inter- ested in the natural beauty of his home town, by assisting the

52

Tree Warden in helping to beautify his neighbor's home.

I desire here to publicly thank those who have interested themselves in the welfare and protection of our shade trees, and who have reported to me owners of houses who have been careless enough to allow damage to be done to the same, and would recommend to the town an appropriation of not less than $500.00.

Respectfully submitted, JOHN I. BRYANT, Trec Warden.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

GENTLEMEN-The Board of Fire Engineers hereby present their report for the past year.

During the year we have had six fire alarms and six still alarms. The total loss by fire is estimated to be about $3,000.00.

Very little repairing has been done to the engine houses the past year, excepting the Hook and Ladder house, which has had new sills; Hose 1, Oxford, has had a new flag pole ; and the hose carriage has also been repaired.

The department is about the same as last year, with the exception of a few changes in the companies. At the fire on the night of Feb. 12, one of the firemen was painfully hurt and is still under the physician's care. This has been the only accident that has happened in the department for some time.

Respectfully submitted,

SELECTMEN'S REPORT.

To the Citizens of Fairhaven :

The Selectmen offer the following report, and refer the citi- zens to the special reports for details of the various depart- ments.

The principal of the "Pease School Fund," amounting to $7,558.12, is deposited as follows :

N. B. Institution for Savings, $5,000.00

N. B. Five Cents Savings Bank, 2,558.12

The income for the past year, amounting to $305.34, has been collected and placed to the credit of School Expenses, as provided by law.

We recommend that the Incidental account be charged with the sum of $1,138.89, and that this sum be credited to the fol- lowing accounts, viz :

Shone Extension Bridge Street account, $42.33

South West Sewer (Cottage Street), 96.56

Adams Street Sewer Extension, 1,000.00

At a special town meeting held Oct. 24, 1907, the following vote was passed :

Voted-To authorize the Selectmen to provide for the pay- ment to the city of New Bedford, of the balance due them for the maintenance of the New Bedford and Fairhaven bridge, and to appropriate the sum of $2,600.00 for said purpose, and to authorize the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow the sum of $2,600.00 for said purpose, and to issue the note or notes of the town therefor, to be payable in the year 1908.

56

The Selectmen have not acted under this vote, and would now suggest that they be authorized to charge the amount to be paid to the City of New Bedford in settlement of their ac- count, to the Incidental account, instead of hiring the amount as directed by the above-quoted vote.

In estimating the requirements for the Debt and Interest ac- count for the coming year we have been guided by the follow- ing figures :

Pease Sewer note, due Nov. 20, 1908. $1,000.00

Sewer bond, due Oct. 1, 1908, 4,500.00

Bridge bond, due Nov. 1, 1908, 1,000.00

Interest on Sewer bonds, $5,000.00 at 4% ,

2,000.00

Bridge bonds, $41,000.00 at 4% . 1,640.00

Notes, $29,000.00, 1,100.00

Temporary loans (estimated ), 500.00

$11,740.00

Deduct amount to credit of Debt and Interest account, $940.10

Deduct Sewer assessments (estimated ), 1,000.00

1,940.10

Leaving amount to be raised by taxation, $9,799.90

In view of the above figures, the Selectmen would suggest that an appropriation of $9,800.00 be made for Debt and In- terest account.

The Selectmen respectfully submit the following estimates for appropriations for the ensuing year, which exceeds the esti- mates for last year by the sum of $2,400.00 :

Highways, $3,000.00

Poor department, 2,200.00
