Report of the Librarian FOR THE YEAR 1933

To the Trustees of the Millicent Library :

Surely and inevitably the depression, unfortunate and painful as it has been, has made evident in a larger way than ever before, the value of the library to the community. We may well ask the question, "What has happened to the library during the depres- sion ?" A keen analysis shows that the library has become more than an educational force. It is functioning as a social agency to help buoy up those who through losses and difficulties are de- pressed in soul and body, and it is accomplishing this through the medium of books which provide reading for pleasure, reading for education, and a means of acquiring better knowledge of one's job or the job to come in the future.

If the depression be interpreted in terms of work, then there has been no depression in the library world. Libraries all over the United States have functioned more completely from the standpoint of service than ever before, and under a pressure such as has never before been placed upon them. The public library has become in these difficult times a stabilizing influence of the greatest importance in helping people to make good use of their enforced leisure.

The Millicent Library, following this path of progress has, in its forty-first year of service, experienced a record year, the proof of which must be shown through the medium of figures. And yet, we may well quote the following from the "Library Occurrent" :

"Statistics prove so many things: The size of towns, the height of kings, The age of children in the schools, The skull development of fools, The wealth of lucky millionaires, The price of hens and mining shares- All things below and things above, It seems to me statistics prove.

But no; statistics never yet Appraised a single violet, Statistics never caught the gleam That dances on a meadow stream Or weighed the anthem of a bird In forest aisles, devoutly heard; Statistics never proved a soul In high or low, in part or whole How much statistics cannot prove

6

I am sure that statistics cannot prove how great a part the Millicent Library has played in the life of this community over a period of the forty-one years of its existence. We owe the results to the generosity and far-sighted wisdom of the donors, who, through love for this town, and the memory of a sister, enriched the life of the whole community by establishing and endowing this institution. Today we are striving to give maxi- mum service as far as we are able.

How much we have done the past year that statistics cannot record must ever remain unsolved. We hope and we feel certain we have helped to keep up the public morale in this difficult period, we hope many who have turned for the first time to the library for entertainment in the absence of funds to provide it in a different way, have profited and have perhaps acquired a taste for reading that will ever remain a habit, we trust that through the children's work we have helped to build character by directing the reading of these future citizens, who in no far distant time must carry on.
