REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
To the Citizens of Fairhaven:
MEETINGS
Your School Committee has held 32 meetings during this year. It is our intent to comply with the intention as well as the spirit of the "open-meeting" law. To this end, notices are posted at the Town Hall announcing the time and place of each meeting as well as the items of business to be covered. Although the press and radio are usually repre- sented at each session, the interpretations given are not always the actual statements and intent of the Committee. For this reason, you are urged to attend. If for some reason a citizen or a group of citizens wish to be heard or wish to consult with the Committee, notice of such intended discussion should be given to the Superintendent, at least five days prior to an intended visit in order that it may be included in the agenda.
Since your Committee exists to serve you and your children, we solicit your support and help by attendance at Committee meetings by securing facts regarding school problems and policy decisions, and by aiding ill communication of facts regarding your schools. At best, communication of the total picture of school problems is most difficult. Although we have inaugurated the "Newsletter" as an insert to go home with the rank card to explain vital school problems, we realize we cannot reach everyone with information. You are invited to communicate with the school principals or the Superintendent of Schools to bring specific problems to their attention. If you do not receive satisfaction, the problem will be referred to the School Committee for a policy decision. Better schools only can be achieved by the active interest and participation of our citizenry.

ENROLLMENT AND SCHOOL FACILITIES
On October 1, 1961, the official enrollment count of the public schools indicated an increase of 66 students in the elementary schools, a decrease of 35 students in the Junior High School, and a decrease of 60 students in the senior high school. This indicates an overall decrease of 29 students in the system.
A closer look, however, at specific areas shows instances of much greater overcrowding than a year ago. The East Fairhaven School shows an increase of from 359 to 389 students, an increase of exactly 30, approximately 24 of which are in the first grade. In the High School, even though approximately 120 Mattapoisett students are no longer attending, the total enrollment dropped only 60 students from 836 to 776 in a building designed for approx- imately 700 students. The Junior High School building size is almost ideally suited to its present enrollment, with 445 students in a building designed for 450. However, since the Superintendent's Office is being housed in the Junior High School, space is being used for other purposes than that for which it was designed.
