TOWN CLERK'S REPORT


At the Annual Town Meeting held March 7, 1911, Charles S. Chase was chosen Moderator, Nathan O. Walker, Silas H. Whelden, D. Thurber Wood, Jr., and George A. Clark were ap- pointed Tellers. William H. Walker, George M. Chase, Josiah S. Place, Albert N. Goff, Juluis G. Romero, Charles A. Horton, George B. Glidden, Edmund Hathaway, and A. Ellery Briggs were appointed a committee to make out a list of appropriations for the year.


The following town officers were elected by ballot:

of spraying the shade trees of the town where the abuttors are willing to pay one half the cost of spraying.


Voted-To accept report of Town Officers as printed.


Voted-The compensation for labor on highways be the same as last year which was: for a man, $1.75 for nine hours work; for a horse, 1272 cents per hour; for horse and cart, 15 cents per hour or $1.50 for ten hours; for yoke of oxen and cart 20 cents per hour; or $2.00 for ten hours; for double team of horses $2.75 per day or $1.25 for each horse; for shoveling snow, 20 cents per hour.


The treasurer's salary was fixed at one hundred and forty dollars, he to pay for his official bond.


The collector of taxes salary was fixed at one per cent of the commitment plus forty dollars, he to pay for his official bond.


Voted-That for the purpose of procuring a temporary loan 'to and for the use of the Town of Dighton in anticipation of the taxes of the present municipal year, the Town Treasurer is here- by authorized and directed to borrow from time to time with the approval of a majority of the Selectmen, a sum or sums not ex- ceeding in the aggregate eleven thousand dollars, and to execute and deliver the note or notes of the Town therefor, payable with- in one year from the time the loan is made, and any debt or debts incurred by said loan or loans to the town under this vote shall be paid from the said taxes of the present municipal year.


Voted-That the Town Officers furnish a bond from some bond Company satisfactory to the Selectmen.


Voted-That the Selectmen be authorized to act for the loan as its agent, in defending any suits, employ legal council, and settle all claims against the Town that in their opinion is reason- able and just.


Voted-To authorize the Selectmen to waive the right of the Town, under the provisions of Section 10, Chapter 47, of the Revised Laws relative to the construction of a State Highway the present municipal year.


Voted-The Selectmen be authorized and instructed to give

a bond indemnifying the State for damage caused by the layout, change of grade and taking of land for the construction of State Highways the present municipal year.


Voted-That the Senator and Representative from our District be instructed to use all honorable means to secure the passage of House Bill No. 509 to release municipalities from pay- ing any part of the expensc in the abolishments of grade cross- ings.


Voted-To request the Town Clerk to send a copy of this vote to the Senator and Representative from this District.


Voted-To adjourn to Saturday April 1st, 1911, at 3 o'clock P.M.


At the adjourned mecting held on that datc it was voted to accept the amended report of the Auditor as printed.


Voted-That the Selectmen be instructed to fill all vacancies in the Town offices.


Voted-To adjourn to Saturday, May 6, 1911, at 3 o'clock · P.M.


At the adjourned meeting held on that date it was voted to adjourn to Saturday June 3, 1911, at 2.30 o'clock P. M. and on that date it was voted to adjourn to Saturday July 1, 1911 at 2.30 o'clock P. M.


At the adjourned meeting on that date it was voted that the salary of the Town Treasurer and Collector of Taxes be increased 10 dollars each to cover the extra expense of the bonds, which they were obliged to furnish.


Voted-To adjourn to the first Saturday in August at 2.30 o'clock P. M.


At the Special Town Meetings held Tuesday Nov. 7, Charles S. Chase was chosen Moderator by ballot.


Voted-To instruct the Selectmen to sell the Fishing Privi- leges belonging to the Town at public auction and they were sold

then and there to S. F. Swift of Sagamore, one for $35 and one for $49.


Voted-That the School Committee be herewith empowered to establish night schools in the Town, and they are also em- powered to spend such sums of money as in their judgment seems warranted.


Voted- That a committee of eleven be appointed to con- sider the matter of celebrating the two hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of the Town and report at an adjourned meet- ing and the following were appointed: Charles S. Chase, D. F. Lane, J. S, Place. C. C. Andrews, J. K. Milliken, A. E. Briggs, E. E. Lincoln, L. J. Wade, J. G. Romero, W.T. Wilcox, and W. B. Carey.


Voted-To adjourn to the first Saturday in December at 3 o'clock P. M.


On the first Saturday in December the adjourned meeting was called to order by the Moderator.


The committee on celebration reported recommending a mass meeting of the citizens (both women and men) be held at the Town House to get their minds as to the advisability of holding the celebrations. Report of committee was accepted and voted to call a mass meeting to be held at the Town House on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7.45 P. M.


Voted-To choose a committee of three to recommend a new design for a Town Seal, and H. C. Briggs, A. E. Briggs and D. F. Lane were appointed.


Voted-To adjourn to Tuesday Dec. 5, at 8 o'clock P.M.


At the Town Meeting held on above date voted unanimously to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town.


Voted-That the same general committee have charge of all details in making plans for this celebration and that this com- mittee make up a list of committees and report at the meeting Dec. 12, 1911.


Voted-To adjourn to Tuesday Dec. 12, 1911, at 7.45 o'clock P.M. .
